Online Gaming Etiquette for Women: Before You Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em
Is it only the men who have the real upper “gaming” hand on the Internet portals for video games? Are women gamers seen as the weaker sex when it comes to showing their gaming prowess in going up against the lords of the online arenas? Is there such a thing as virtual chivalry to complement online gaming etiquette for women?
If you’re a gamer on the Internet, it’s likely that you have thought about these things – whether or not you are female (although the latter may have been more affected by this issue).
Upon thinking about it, you may have pondered if this is influenced by a lack of respect for most of the female gamers. Or, perhaps, it has something to do with the dictates of the past (even though computers weren’t such a growing fad in those days).
The latter may hold true in its essence about battles. But, pinpointing this as the main reason may not be feasible.
Continuous Mark of Indifference and Hostility
Male and female had been going against each other since time immemorial. And we are sure that you know that as a fact.
From the cave days of being Neanderthals decades ago, and up to now where modern technology is more a part of everyone’s lives, the battle between the sexes continue.
Some may say that it’s just a bit different now because the fights have somehow escalated in a way, and moved on unto the entertainment scene of games.
Since online media isn’t spared from this, pc users would perhaps see more of the madness, disrespect, and a lot of those negative emotions that never fails to belittle or confuse others who are not of the same gender.
Attempt to Lead the Pack
But, why are these things happening? And why are most of the men being fame-crazed individuals who would merely like to hog all the brightness of the spotlight to themselves - not wanting to share it with others who do not have the same physical male body?
It may be because most men view themselves as stronger and better. They see themselves as leaders in their own right. They have a mindset to win at every chance they can get. They do not think or worry about their fears so much if they are facing some challenges.
They are, in fact, in every sense of the word, “men”.
Futile Verbal Attempts or Not
The challenge, then, by women towards men is usually done verbally.
Thing is, although women are known to have an easier way of expressing themselves through verbal language, this may or may not do them good on the gaming sites.
Yes, fighting against each other is dominant on the video game portals. After all, games are really designed for a battle of wits and smart techniques.
But the players of both sexes aren’t merely holding their fights on the games per se. They direct it more on each other.
And since most of the gamers are men, they would like to see to it that they will continue to hold the title of being the kings of the gaming arenas.
So, what will females have, then, when these things that mainly border on male machismo still run the scene?
It’s a hard world. But it is observed that females aren’t “just” going to give up to all these things.
The Burning Desire to be as One
If you’ve been going online and checking out the gaming sites, you must’ve noticed that there are portals which seem to have more females than males, and others having it the other way around. The number is actually unnecessary when it comes to checking out how these players continue playing.
It’s actually amusing when you see them in action.
Males vs. Females – no matter what part of the globe they reside in.
And even though there seems to be an ongoing battle between the sexes, female contenders strive to carve their niche on the online arenas.
They play hard to win. They claw their way up when they lose a particular session.
Question is, is it really worth it to challenge and try to beat the men in their game? Will gaming respect be achieved once that is done? Are they doing it right?
Beating The Men Sweetly
Some females may choose to go with the flow, others may just abandon the games, and a few may want to continue the battle to get the respect they deserve in the gaming world of men.
Perhaps, in this part, it may be best for females to think of a plan to beat the men in their own feminine way.
They may have been going at it in the wrong manner ever since, thinking that if they act like how the men do, they would win and earn their honors of being on the softer side of humanity (yet bearing a particular strength that is completely different from their male counterparts).
So, what’s this “joining the men before beating them” got to do by going full force on their own femininity?
It actually comprises a lot of things.
Breaking this down into understandable points to study and think about would include:
* Joining the men in their notion of glory
* Joining them because of the fun part of video gaming luxuries
* Being one in the spirit of clean gaming competition
Together with all these things, females should still hold on to what makes them the alluring human creatures of the world. And that can be their secret weapon to win.
Sticking to One’s Physical Make-up
That’s right. Joining doesn’t necessarily mean that a woman has to be a man to play the game online.
Joining is much more than that. And it dwells on certain areas (as aforementioned) that aren’t usually seen or noticed. Thus, this is where more focus and understanding is needed in order for one to truly rise above the rest of the females who seem to trudge along unhappily.
It may be inferred that perhaps, in going this way, respect for female gamers will then be earned.

Yeah, that whole “Man VS Woman” thing is a load of crap, particularly in the gaming world. Video games are tactical, and the only physical thing about them is hand-eye coordination. I’m a 21-year old female, and I can kick most of my guy friends’ asses at just about everything, and they ALWAYS get ticked. If you can’t lose, you’ve got no business playing.

I totally agree Grace.
Gender has nothing to do with how well you can play a game. I just think guys spend more time with it. Us gals tend to find other things more important to do with life however.
And I KNOW women have a lot more patience…. we tend to bide our time and wait for any revenge that is needed. *grin*

I’ve been so into online playing nowadays, and I am so shocked that many guys pretend to be women to just gain stuff. It’s really disgusting. Being whiny characters on the games and all.

Sure, there’s a lot of fighting going around.
North vs South, Elves vs Orcs, Good vs Evil, Capitalist vs Communist, Light vs Dark, Red vs Blue, Aliens vs Marines … More than 80% of the gaming industry deliberately places you in any setting where such a caricatural opposition is unavoidable, and technically forced upon you by the game engine itself, sometimes to the point that you automatically attack the opposing faction against your will, like that game whose name contains 2 ‘W’ and an ‘O’.
But when you look at the players -behind- the characters, sorry, but there’s no occurance like men = warriors, women = mages, FIGHT ! Groups are more or less well balanced, players of any sex playing characters of any sex not necessarily related to theirs.
Moreover, place them in a game where there’s no Manichean background, and a great freedom of play, and what this article describes simply cease to exist.
Don’t forget about the way games are designed. Game designers like to push us into stereotypes, it makes their jobs easier.
The only strong opposition that exists everywhere is between polite and rude people - and this is a matter of education that has nothing to do with gender.
