Anonymity; Warps Our Manners?
When we were kids, almost all of us were raised with manners that would most probably last for a very long time. During interaction with other people, our manners and etiquette are tested, especially when there are rude people trying to make us blow our top.
These rude people we’re talking about especially exist in our (tsk, much beloved) cyber world. Sure a lot of people, if not all of us, encounter these (ahem did anybody say disturbed?) types. Most blame the warped behavior of these people to the lack of identification in gaming worlds. But really, that’s not a solid case.
It’s time to say that people turn arrogant and rude NOT because of the luxury of online gaming anonymity, but because most people who are gaming jerks were not really hard core fans of being proper gents and ladies to begin with! It might be easy to blame the (really) unwanted actions of these online jerks on anonymity, but what if we look at the idea that these people were already not so likeable to begin with?
These people have already been taking medications (happy pills?) long before they entered the gaming domain. If not gaming addicts turned nuisances, these annoying individuals are probably newbies (noobs) looking for trouble. One can easily compare them to a new hacker trying to cause ping troubles on unsuspecting (and most probably not very tech savvy) webmasters.
Well, anonymity might be somewhat involved when it comes to the unwanted changes on some individuals, but the problem really starts on their personalities before they even ever started gaming.
The only problem the serious gamers are facing now is how to make themselves shine and totally not be associated with the slob bunch, well, that is if they want to. Serious gamers are that, serious gamers, and they consider the gaming time they have to be very serious. Most noteworthy gamers do not have time to lounge about, as they need to level up and such, whereas the trouble makers have all the time in the world (which is why they don’t have proper gears). People who feel the urge to mock and assault others any way they can are turning to online gaming in order to be jerks and not get beaten up in the process, which is such a huge shame, as gaming was established to bring relaxation and escape from the daily grind of work and school, not to be a hub of jerks abusing the system.
So really, a need for reform will most likely come, but the real question is, when?
