Splurging for Rock Band
Rock Band, one of the biggest and most successful games nowadays is ready for its UK debut. But hey, there seems to be a lot of chaos going on. No wonder Harmonix were so tight lipped about the price tags of this phenomenal game… They knew the angry mob was going to get them; they were just trying to stall them.
If you are a gamer in the US, and you already have the game, you’re lucky. UK fans need to shell out £95 more than you did in the land of the free. Yup, gaming is getting more and more expensive, so to the gamers out there who are not yet earning a steady income, you better prepare, who knows how much you’ll have to pay for a hot game next month.
The lead designer of Rock Band claims that although the pricing of this particular game in UK is quite expensive, it is worth it, because the experience Rock Band brings to its fans is unique. “But Rock Band isn’t normal in video games”, says Rob Kay, lead designer of Rock Band. Well, of course its not, who says Rock Band is something to scoff at? But who would be crazy enough to buy a game a quarter of the price of some consoles?
Sure we would all like to blame the VAT and the government, or even the neighbor’s dog, for the high price of this in demand game, but really, when it all comes down to it, money is money, and everyone want a bigger paycheck, or more zeros in their bank accounts.
Computerandvideogames.com was able to get in touch with Rob Kay, regarding the controversial prices of this hot commodity. It seems that the game designer insists that the lack of news is not because of their fear of pitchforks and sharpened controllers, but because they did not want the market to suffer due to the lack of stock (based on the prices however, stocks are very unlikely to fly off the shelves, smart move guys).
Well, one has to admit that there are a lot of modifications and exclusivity with this release. It is quite obvious that one of the goals of Harmonix was to appeal locally to their UK consumers, but really, not everyone can afford the outlandish price that the company has set upon their customers.
They get huge points for their local vibe, but really, they’re way off the “price friendly” or “consumer enticing” mark.
