Critical Hit - Get Smart
Welcome to the Get Smart edition of the Critical Hit
First, props to “Agent” Peter Segal (Director) for getting smart and making this film
correctly! I walked into this film with some misconceptions that I had heard. I’m glad this happened because I was met with a pleasant surprise! First off, Segal did a great job. Never heard of him? Maybe you’ve seen these movies that he’s done. The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates and Tommy Boy just to name a few.
On with the acting! Steve Carell is hit or miss with me. He’s either so over the top that it’s not funny or he’s brilliant. In Get Smart, he was brilliant. Maxwell Smart was not portrayed as Don Adams did but it was similar. Similar yet different if you know what I mean. I enjoyed it. Carell was hilarious. The small, intricate details that he did when not talking was what sold me. I laughed a ton!
Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 was great too. She was the serious character that made the funny character that much better.
Dwayne Johnson or THE ROCK as I call him was Agent 23. He did fine. It wasn’t his best acting job but frankly the character wasn’t very deep either. I’ve come to expect pretty good acting from the Rock and this was good but not great. However, I feel it was the characters fault and not his own.
Alan Arkin played the Chief and he was much funnier than I thought he would be. Hilarious even! The line about the swordfish made me cry. It was that funny!
Terence Stamp played Siegfried (KNELL BEFORE ZOD!) He was hilarious as the bad guy. The line to Dalip about him eating the crew was great. It was so unexpected for a bad guy to be sarcastic and funny. I loved it.
James Caan played the Prez. He basically played a parody of President Bush. It was funny but confused me a tad as there was a line about how Siegfried wouldn’t miss Hollywood’s Political Analysis anymore after he blew them all up.
Dalip Singh played Dalip. You may know him as the Great Khali from the WWE or even from his role in The Longest Yard as Turley. Remember the “He was like, OH MY BALLS!” line? Yup, Dalip has another one of those in Get Smart. Another hilarious moment.
There were two bit parts in Get Smart that was a nice surprise but they are two of my favorite actors because I find them hilarious in everything. Bill Murray as Agent 13 and Patrick Warburton as Hymie. “Oh yeah…I feel it” -Kronk
The plot for Get Smart wasn’t too fancy but it was believable. It had all the spy elements of deceptions and espionage and it didn’t hurt the movie at all. I don’t have much to say about it because I’d rather not ruin it. See it for yourself and come back and discuss with us about it.
All in all I thought Get Smart was great. They took a comedy series about spies and continued the laughter. At the same time they threw in a dramatic plot that blended very well with the comedy aspects. This movie is a great fusion of drama and comedy. It has so many hilarious one-liners and so much hilarious physical comedy. That’s the kind of stuff that I love and will ALWAYS laugh at. I laughed my butt off and if you’d like to as well then you’ll like my recommendation. It’s a GO from me. Go see it and go laugh.
Till next time, be watching for those Critical Hits, they’re deadly.

Get Smart looks okay over all, though Steve Carell seems to be veering more and more toward not so funny slapstick humor
