Critical Hit - WALL-E (the movie)
Well Pixar does it again. Stand back Disney, we all know you can’t do CGI brilliance
without them.
I was intrigued by this movie when I first hear about it, like two years ago (Gotta love those early plugs for movies that won’t come out for another couple of years) because of the premise of this movie. A clean up robot left on Earth to help clean up while the Humans take a joy ride and wait for him to finish. Well, actually a fleet of Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth (Class) robots.
My intrigue was correct. The first bit of the film was fun to watch as Wall E cruises around, making trash skyscrapers made of small cubes. Hey, after 700 years, he’d have a few. This robot collects some fun trinkets though.
Enter Eve. The Earth Veegtation Excavator begins to search Earth for signs of plant life. After she meets Wall E and decides that he is harmless, she is stuck with him by her every move. The rest you will have to see for yourself. I don’t want to ruin any plots.
The acting was good. John Ratzenberger makes a small appearance as always. Kathy Najimy plays a small part as well. Sigourney Weaver plays the ships voice too. She’s popping up in bit parts all over now it seems.
A special props goes out to one of my favorite comedians, Fred Willard for playing the first real human in a Pixar movie. He plays Shelby Forthright, BnL CEO and global King of Earth. Its filmed with a camera, not CGI. I find him funny in anything he’s in.
Ben Burtt and Elissa Knight get my props for voicing Wall E and Eve. You may not think that it would be hard but it had to be. Eve could say some things verbally but Wall E was mostly just sounds that had to relay to us his emotions. Bravo to them and the Pixar animators for bringing this character to life. Wall E is one of their best characters to date. Eve is a good one too. Both will be remembered for a long time.
Geek moment: I guess Eve was designed by Jonathan Ive. He’s the main designer for Apple and credited for designing the iPod. I thought that was cool.
Pixar out did themselves with their animations. The whole film was beautiful and very realistic. Wall E and Eve show so much emotion and most of it was done with Eve’s eyes and Wall E’s goggle lenses. It was visually thrilling to say the least.
My recommendation is a GO! Take the kids because they’ll enjoy it too. In the theater you’ll be able to enjoy the crisp picture of the CGI and oh yeah, you’ll laugh a lot too. I laughed plenty.
Till next time, be watching for those Critical Hits, they’re deadly.
Now that the review is over I want to take a paragraph and explain what bothered me about the “message” that Wall E tries to send to its viewers.
Warning for spoilers below here…..

Basically the plot isn’t too deep but yet it tries to be. Disney is basically preaching at us that over consumerism could ruin the planet. From all companies in the world to say this, I think THEY should be one of the last. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that something like this could happen IF the same circumstances took place as in the film. In Wall E, the world is controlled by one company called BnL (Buy N Large) and the CEO, Shelby Forthright, of that company is King. The world gets so lazy due to his products making life so easy that they trash the Earth and take off in a ship to wait for it to be cleaned up. The problem that I have with this premise is that I don’t think that there are enough stupid people in the world that would allow the Earth to get that bad. But hey, that’s just me. That’s enough.

My kids looked forward to this and it was a fun movie as well. I liked the fact that a lot of the look of wall-e was similar to that of the robot from the 1986 movie Short Circuit.
