Critical Hit - Wanted
This is a mature film about a guy who lives in misery of a 9 to 5 office job (like most of us poor souls) but then finds his way into a new world of villainy and assassination. The movie is based off of a mature comic book series but only very loosely. The story is changed pretty drastically. I don’t think most audiences would like a straight adaptation of the comic books. Wanted wins for changing stuff around in my book. Why? Keep reading to find out.
James McAvoy (Tumnus, lol) plays Wesley Gibson, an Accountant Manager or something stupid like that at an office. He hates it (like most people) and wants out but isn’t brave enough to do it himself. He has panic attacks constantly and can’t over come his fears. His girlfriend is cheating on him, his boss hates him and his life is miserable. McAvoy plays Gibson wonderfully. Wesley is extremely believable and one that most can relate to. He learns that his father was a member of an elite assassin group called the Fraternity.
One day a super assassin named Fox enters his life. Angelina Jolie plays Fox and plays her well. She is all business and no real emotion during the majority of the film. It was great. I’m not a huge Jolie fan but her role here was diminished enough for me to enjoy.
One in the Fraternity he meets the boss, Sloan played by the man, Morgan Freeman. Freeman is excellent in this film (just like every film he’s in). Sloan is an interesting character that has the onion layer effect to the story. Good stuff.
Outside of those three the rest of the actors do fine in their roles but none stand out. Honestly none are very complex but these three. The story is decent but as I said earlier, VERY loosely based on the comic books. The comic books are much to evil for a film. Audiences wouldn’t handle well in my opinion. However, Wanted appealed to a lot of people. Our showing was sold out and the age group was young 20’s to 50’s. So it did well.
If you like the Matrix then you’ll like Wanted. Beware that Wanted is pretty graphic and it earns its rated R statues but it also delivers a story where curving a bullet is believable (and actually explained in the film, go figure!) Wanted is also pretty funny. Wesley’s attitude toward all the crazy stuff happening to him is hilarious and made me laugh a lot.
For sure this is an action flick. Not tons of dialogue and not a terrible deep plot but its still good. The action goes from balls to the wall to Matrix style and back and forth. It all melded together really well and met my approval.
So I say it’s a GO from me but ONLY if you can handle a mature themed film where the bad guys wreak hell. If you can’t then maybe you should wait and rent it or just pass altogether. This is a little insight to my darker side. I tend to like the darker films so if you don’t then this review is my warning to you…you may not like Wanted but I thought it was fun.
Till next time, be watching for those Critical Hits, they’re deadly.
