DotA Gigs and Tournaments… Which one to choose?
The game of Defense of the Ancients, or DOTA as it is fondly called, has been a hit ever since it has been
launched a few years ago. Up until this year, more players are being drawn to this game that may be played thru a Local Area Network or thru a GG client or the internet. Meanwhile, old players are thinking up of new ways to dominate the game and amazing hero builds that are either for farming, harassing the enemy heroes, or for destroying as much towers as possible. Because of these, tournaments are being held not only officially but there are websites that offer to host these mini tournaments. And if being a recognized player isn’t merely enough, cash prizes that start at 35 US dollars are being offered as prize money.
Some tournament offers from the tense 1-on-1 scenario to the “watch-your-back” 5-on-5 game. These tournaments usually are hosted on gg-client. The game modes may usually be all pick (-ap) or all random (-ar). Players may designate the game mode and the special commands that may be used such as Super Creeps (-sc), item drop (-id), no powerups (-np), and only mid (-om). Even the designation of creeps, whether top, mid or bottoms creeps will be allowed. Even some heroes may be banned from the tournament. Item sharing may also be allowed depending on the hosting team. There are also some item limitations that may be introduced to the tournament. For example, DREAMHACK DOTA has specified that in their DOTA tournament, only two Necronomicons and two Eul’s or Guinsoos were allowed per team.
Some tournaments are also being organized online and players may register at the site as well. For the game site though, a certain venue will be given by the host. Some hosts usually require an entry fee to play in the tournament. For Tek’s 3-on-3 DOTA tournament, the match is just made up of a single game. The selection of the heroes for each player will be done prior to the start of the game. Each team has the chance to suggest three heroes that will not be allowed to be picked but they also have the chance to forfeit this privilege. The Necronomicon, Eul’s and Guinsoo’s are popular items in the game that are usually restricted by the hosts, usually only two Necronomicon, two Eul’s or two Guinsoo’s per team is allowed. For this game, even the chat modes are given limitations. It is said in the site that only the captain of each team is allowed to use All Chat during the game. Their cash prize is as high as 160 US Dollars for the first placers and 60 US Dollars for the second placers with 8 teams. If there are sixteen teams will play, the stakes, along with the cash prizes will also be higher. 320 US Dollars await the first placers and 120 US dollars are granted to the second placers. Third placers’ cash prize are still to be discussed or they may not have a cash prize at all.
A long-timer in the DOTA tournament business is the Bored Aussie DOTA Tournament which is now on their seventh season. More time is allotted to the interested teams to register for this exciting season. The Bored Aussie DOTA tournament is the biggest and longest running DOTA Tournament online that is held in Australia. More players and teams are expected to join, ranging from 32 teams up to a whopping 40 teams! It is said to draw out serious, competitive and professional players especially that a limited slot of free entries are being given. Teams are allowed to have five regular or starting members and two to five substitutions. A player cannot play for more than one team and alias checks will be done. Two divisions will be done to know which of the teams will go on to the main games: the Seeded Division, which will be made up of 8 seeded teams; and the Opens Division which will comprise of 32 unseeded teams that are split into four more groups (A, B, C, and D). A Double Elimination match will then be done. The seeded teams have the privilege to choose whether they pick the sentinel or the scourge side. The rules for this tournament are more or less the same as the previous season but a few revisions and edits are done. Creep skipping was not allowed so players may not attack enemy towers without any creeps or creep support. If the hero has creep support and while attacking an enemy building, the creeps are killed, the hero is then still allowed to continue in its attack.
The pandemonium of playing DOTA has truly and evidently reached worldwide. But ultimately, building a phat hero is what every player dreams of achieving.
