Critical Hit - Hancock
Another Independence Day here in America and another Will Smith Summer Blockbuster to go see. Will it live up to the hype and the long-standing reputation of Will Smith July 4th movies?
John Hancock is an unconventional and almost unwilling super hero for the city of Los Angeles. Hancock lives like a bum in L.A. where the whole city hates him. Why? He saves the day when it needs saving but he does it without much thought process or care for the rest of the citizenry. That is until he saves the life of a P.R. guy named Ray Embrey. Ray attempts to repay the favor of saving his life by trying to save Hancock’s reputation with the people of L.A.
It makes for one of the best original premises for a movie since the Matrix. I giggled and geeked out like a little boy geeks out over Boo Berry (which I still do by the way). Will Smith is one of my favorite actors and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie. He’s been so excellent for so long that he has some high standards with me and I think he lived up to them as John Hancock. Charlize Theron did well with her character of Ray’s wife, Mary Embrey. She’s been known to do some crazy characters and while this character may not be too over the top, she does well at it. Jason Bateman also does a fine job as the straight man in this crazy comedy/drama.
So, did I like it? Is it worth seeing? Well, lets get to the story. A plot makes or breaks a movie in my opinion. You can have the best acting and the best CGI ever but if your plot sucks then your movie sucks (see Star Wars Episodes I, II & III for examples). Hancock is a short movie coming in at only 92 minutes. The plot is a little deeper than I expected it to be but doesn’t begin to explore it until very late in the film. This made the plot seem very rushed near the end while the first half of the movie moved at a decent if not slightly fast pace. The added meat in the last half hour or so of the film could have been a whole film in itself but instead it was rushed through and that disappointed me a lot. Hancock could have easily been a 2 and a half hour film and have explained everything just right. However, it wasn’t and the movie suffers from it.
So what do I think? Don’t get me wrong, I liked the film. Again, the premise alone had me very excited but the movie should have been longer and explained more. Is it worth seeing? Oh yes. It gets a GO from me. You will have a good time and be pleased but you may be wanting a little more in depth explanation for things, that’s all.
Till next time, watch out for those Critical Hits!

I also felt the majority of the funny stuff was shown in the previews. I agree it was fun to watch but also felt rushed towards the end. Certainly worth watching though!

This is one of the better movies that have come out this year. Of course I tend to enjoy most of Will Smiths movies anyways. While not always funny the idea of the movie was overall fun.
