GAMEPLAY
Modes
Soulcalibur IV is accompanied by the four classic modes: Story, Arcade, Training, and Museum. A new mode is also part of the game and is called Tower of Lost Souls and enables the player to fight in special battles, in order to gain rewards.
CHARACTER DESIGN
Designing characters in Soulcalibur IV is the same as it was in Soulcalibur III. The main difference in the two is that is Soulcalibur IV the player can choose the character that he or she wants the character to mimic, rather than there being a predetermined weapon with each character. This is possible with all characters except the Star Wars guest characters.
New tools are available in the character creation mode. A larger number of character voices are available. The physical appearance of a character can be altered. The stance of the characters of the verses screen can be altered as well.
Items affect the statistics of the character. Armor may help increase health, or defense or perhaps attack. Some of the equipment may help increase skill points that allow the character to equip special traits that change how the character acts in the game. Regular characters can also modestly be modified in costumes and skill sets.
ACTIVE MATCHING BATTLE
Soulcalibur IV has a different battle mode than the Souldcalibur games that preceded it. The new battle mode has been dubbed Active matching Battle or AMB. This mode allows the players to engage in battle with multiple opponents at one time under separate conditions.
CRITCAL FINISH
Soulcalibur IV will allow for an all new Critical Finish System. Near the Health Meters for the character is a gem. That is the representation of the “Soul Gage.” The gem is initially green but will change colors depending in the activity of the character. The gem will change to blue when the character is attacking and red when he is at guard. When the gem is solid red, the opponent can strike the character and break his or her armor. This will change their appearance and weaken them until the end of the match. More damage takes place where the armor was destroyed. There is an armor meter. The meter has three phases, high, mid, and low. If a player kicks the Soul Gage to low two times, the second time he will have the opportunity to perform a Critical Finish. This will automatically defeat the opponent. Each character has a Critical Finish move that is unique to them.
FORCE ABILITIES
The Guest characters from Star Wars, Darth Vader, the Apprentice, and Yoda will all include exclusive Forced-based methods. Darth Vader will use the force to push and choke his opponents, while Yoda uses the Force to jump into the air and reign aerial attacks on his enemies. The Apprentice will use the Force to use lighting. The Force Meter will be drained by any of these moves. After the Force meter is emptied, forced based moves will begin to drain the character’s health.
ONLINE FIGHTING
Online fighting for Soulcalibur is finally an option for players. This is the first time players will have the opportunity to fight each other online. Standard VS and Special VS are available in online play. Standard VS is for classic matches and Special VS is for customized characters. It is possible that created characters will be playable in online multiplayer mode.

Darth Vader and Yoda fighting it out… oh wait… they are only on one or the other. What on earth is that all about? So you see it on the commercials but you don’t get to experience it first hand? So weak! Why can’t they have all of the playable characters on one game and release it on both of the systems? As much as I am a Soul Calibur fan I cannot excuse the this fact.
