PS 3 for the Family
The big boss of PlayStation, Kaz Hira, is very confident that the PS3 will be a console for the family in the near future… Well, that’s what he thinks.
PlayStation 2 was a family friendly console, as many of the games were quite tame and not so macho, as compared to the current positioning of PS 3 and the games one can play on it.
One might remember that when the PS 3 was first released on November 11, 2006, not a lot of people were happy regarding the hefty price range it had (ranging from USD 500++). The console’s reputation (at first) was that the features it presented were not only almost over-the-edge new, but also had a mucho macho appeal.
Most of the games which were developed for the PS 3 console are around the Mature, if not Teen, ratings, which is of course the first obstacle that the PS 3 team will come up against. How can “everyone” love a console, if there aren’t enough games for everyone to go around (without getting too bored, that is).
Hirai agrees that there is no more place to reform if they want to appeal to the casual gamer, which is quite funny, because weren’t that the first target audience they had?
We’re talking about a dad wanting to sit down with his little girl and play something fun yet wholesome, something appealing to kids. But with the current reputation of the PS 3, along with the games that can be played on it, that is quite farfetched, to be realistic.
Sure 10 years is a good, long time for something to evolve. And that includes reforming a reputation and target audience.
But we’re talking about electronics here.
Cellphones get changed every 6 months, or less, in most places. December comes around every single year, and with that comes along the demand for new stuff to give the kids.
When Wii or some other new console company comes along with a new design or concept for “everyone”, then there’s big trouble for PS 3. It’s either “appeal to a great audience” almost overnight or risk bankruptcy.
