Critical Hit - Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Star Wars = More George Lucas = More of the same
I love Star Wars, its one of my all time favorite universes to have a story be told in. I love the Jedi Order and the Sith and all of it. So, why exactly didn’t I like Clone Wars?
Ever since Star Wars, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, George Lucas has been trying to literally recreate the success formula that he stumbled upon. I say stumbled because he’s never found it again. Why? He’s literally been trying to recreate it, character-by-character, line-by-line. Star Wars was the first movie trilogy, ever! Its still one of the best, ever! Yet, Lucas continues to try to recreate what worked 30 years ago instead of reinventing himself. He needs to take a queue from the James Bond franchise. In
Casino Royale, they finally decided to make the Bond films more modern and enjoyable to today’s audiences. As a result, I’m very excited for
Quantum of Solace. When I first heard about Clone Wars, I got mad. I knew it was going to be a story that SHOULD have been apart of the prequel’s story line but wasn’t.
(Side note: the whole story BEFORE Episode IV was the Clone Wars and guess what the prequels did, yup, skipped over them totally. We saw the beginning and the end but nothing of the actual wars. Seriously George?! You thought that was a good idea?!)
Clone Wars was interesting. It had some really kool moments to be honest. However, it suffered from Lucas’s none creative spirit. He couldn’t reinvent the Indiana Jones franchise with another story and he can’t with Star Wars. He’s really a dope if you ask me because other people have written some spectacular stories in the Star Wars Extended Universe through novels, comic books and video games. All George would have to do is take one of those. The Jedi Knight and Knights of the Old Republic game stories are fantastic. Maybe George could get a clue and try reinventing Star Wars instead of trying to the same old same old like he did in Clone Wars.
Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi (really, them AGAIN?! I want new characters!) are fighting in the Clone Wars. The Republic needs Jabba the Hutt on their side to win the battle on the Outer Belt front. The Separatists have kidnapped Jaba’s kid (what? He’s got a little slug baby?! I don’t even wanna know how that happened) and to win his favor, the Jedi must rescue little Stinky.
In the meantime, Anakin gets a Padawan who is a mouthy teenage girl. Star War lore dictates that children are raised from very early to be a Jedi. They learn respect for their elders VERY early on, yet this Padawan learner has no respect for anyone. Really? I’m supposed to buy that George! Seriously, just give me the writes to Star Wars and I’ll reinvent the franchise for ya.
It’s a very boring and typical Star Wars plot with nothing new added. You get to see the Clone Troopers with different hair styles and stuff which is fun. The battle scenes are fun and the Light Saber duels are sort of interesting. However, with no limitations in the CG environment, I expected grander fights.
The acting was very sub par but Christopher Lee and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles as Count Dooku and Mace Windu respectively.
As a result, I’m going to give this a RENT vote. Its not worth your time nor your money for the theater. I don’t care if you are the biggest Star Wars fan in your county, its not worth it. Just wait for the DVD. Even then you probably won’t enjoy it. I think the only thing that will save Star Wars is the death of George Lucas. Seriously, when he passes, someone else will be head of the franchise and take it in a new and hopefully exciting direction. Something George just can’t do.
Until next time, watch out for those Critical Hits!
