Critical Hit - Igor
Igor
Yes Master! That’s me! The Grand Master is back with another review. Hopefully I’ll have more movies up here a little more often than they have been. The summer movies are done and the fall ones are starting to come out.
Igor is an all CGI film about an Igor. I know, you’re shocked. The story goes that in the country of Malaria (seriously who named that country?!) Evil Scientists think up their crazy inventions and enter them into an annual science fair. The winning creation is then used to threaten the rest of the world into a random or else the evil creation will be unleashed. A silly plot indeed.
One Igor is a smarty and wants to be an evil scientist himself. After his Master blows himself up, he gets his chance. He creates life (which apparently is hard but he makes it look a little too easy) and the plot is off.
The characters are alright but the famous voices are a plenty! John Cusack, John Cleese, Steve Buscemi, Sean Hayes, Eddie Izzard, Jennifer Coolidge, Jay Leno, Molly Shannon, Christian Slater and James Lipton. Yeah, it’s sorta ridiculous but even with that much talent its still a lacking end product. The resulting film has Cusack, Buscemi, Hayes, Issard and Shannon shine. I don’t like Molly Shannon at all but she did well in this film (perhaps because her CGI character was better looking! OH! Was that outloud?) Cleese was barely in it, as was Slater as was Lipton. Leno was nothing special. Coolidge was in it plenty but was only interesting as a voice as Heidi. So the voice acting was nothing special over all. Shannon was probably the best, which again is sad because I’m not a fan of hers at all.
The CGI was terrible. I know it was done to look goofy on purpose but it seemed lazy more than anything. I think the CGI hindered it instead of helping.
Over all I wasn’t impressed. The point of the film is to be funny and 95% of the humor seemed forced. I think I know humor (weather you think I’m funny in this blog or not) and it was very lacking in Igor. Buscemi’s character and Hayes character were funny at points. Shannon’s character was funny some but only because it was acting humor. (which I tend to understand due to having one in the family) My rating is a RENT. Wait for the DVD and only if you are bored or your kids want to see it. Its safe for the kids but not really worth taking them to the theatre for unless you just need some free time.
I think this movie had a great concept for a comedy but its execution was poor. I also think the CGI killed it. If it were a live action film it would have helped and been MUCH more interesting to watch due to the fantastical setting of the film. Oh well, what’s done is done and another good idea of mine is missed by Hollywood. Surprise, surprise!
Until next time, watch out for those Critical Hits! They can be deadly.
