Critical Hit - City of Ember
City of Ember
Here’s an interesting, simple but fun film. The story takes place in a city called Ember.
Lights shine high above the city which are powered by a giant generator. Outside of the city is pitch black. (No, Vin Diesel isn’t involved) No one is allowed to venture into the darkness and thus everyone stays in Ember.
At the beginning, a group of young kids, including Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet, have their Advancement Day. They choose their life long profession from a hat. Doon & Lina don’t get what they want, so they switch and are both happy.
Throughout the film, these two find clues that show them what the REAL situation of Ember is about.
This is based off of a children’s book and takes a few liberties (as movie tend to do). The big secret about Ember is revealed at the beginning of the film and I wasn’t too happy about that. So, if you want to read the book first then I won’t ruin it for you here. However, if you don’t care, then go see the film and you won’t be disappointed.
As far as acting goes, Bill Murray as Mayor Cole was great. Harry Treadaway as Doon Harrow did well as did his co-star Saoirse Ronan as Lina Mayfleet. Martin Landau made a small appearance as Sul and was pretty funny.
So, if you want a simple but fun adventure that the entire family can enjoy, then I say GO see City of Ember. You’ll enjoy it.
Until next time, watch out for those falling lights and Critical Hits!
