Critical Hit - Defiance
Defiance
An intense ride of defiance against the Nazi’s to simply survive. Defiance is just that, a survivor story and it’s a true one. This story is about three Jewish brothers who escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest. They flee because their family is slaughtered by the Nazi’s and they have nowhere else to turn. Inside the forest, more and more Jews join their group. Tuvia Bielski leads as eldest of the Bielski brothers. As word spreads of their village, more and more Jews come seeking them for refuge. Their only endeavor is to survive. Zus Bielski, gets fed up with being second in command and joins a Russian resistance group near the Jewish village.
The story is a gripping tale about a poor group of people that are hunted for no reason other than they are alive. The things this particular group went through are astounding. They pushed and pushed to survive through a war with no home but the woods. That fact alone should be enough that everyone living should see the movie just to remember these people for the miniscule two hours. Why? Because, those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Yes, movies aren’t much of a history lesson but when it’s the only thing you digest, then Defiance is worth every bit of your time and money.
The acting was fantastic. Daniel Craig plays Tuvia and Zus Bielski is played by Liev Schreiber. I’m already a fan of Schreiber as he has impressed me in several roles already. However, Craig has showed me that he can do more than put on a tux and look cool as James Bond. Craig has some serious acting ability to share with the world. Mark Feuerstein, Jamie Bell and Mia Wasikowska should also be noted for doing exceptionally well. Everyone else in the film did fine. There were no bad actors in Defiance just smaller parts with not as much character.
I urge everyone to GO see this movie. I know its rated R but if you can stand a little language and a good dose of violence (however, historic and realistic) then I suggest you catch Defiance before it leaves theaters.
Until next time, drink some vodka and watch out for those Critical Hits!

After escaping Nazi-occupied Poland during the onset of World War II, three Jewish brothers, Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), and Asael Bielski (Jamie Bell) flee to the Belarusian forest where they encounter several other refugees. After numerous casualties from hasty attacks on German soldiers, Tuvia decides that revenge be substituted for survival and begins constructing a village in the forest to shelter his comrades and the growing influx of Jews fleeing Poland (see polishjews.org about Polish Jews). Zus, opposed to Tuvia’s more peaceful tactics, opts to join Russian partisans operating nearby, but fate and a common enemy will find their paths crossing once again.
