Critical Hit - Taken
Taken
An action ride with a purpose! Taken shows us the life of a former spy, Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) who has sacrificed everything but his life in service of his country. Now, he has retired and moved near his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace) to resurrect their relationship. Bryan’s ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen) gets in the way and is a pain in the butt to him.
Kim and Lenore, attempt to trick Byran into letting their daughter go to Europe to visit Paris when in reality, she’s going to be following U2 around. Bryan lets it go but makes sure that Kim checks in with him often.
When Kim doesn’t check in Bryan calls her several times before she picks up while her friend is being abducted. Kim is then abducted and the former spy tells the bad guys that he’s going to kill them.
The rest of the movie follows Bryan in his hunt for his daughter and the bad guys who have taken her. It’s a fun action film that brings into the spotlight an issue in our society that not many think about. I’m glad this movie brings it up because I’m sure a lot of people have never thought of it before.
Taken also brings up fine points about parenting. If you are stupid enough to send your daughter to Europe with another friend, then you deserve to have her abducted. Clearly, the girls were not responsible enough to be out on their own hence why they are kidnapped. Taken says that being a paranoid parent, is alright. I agree. I’m sure I’ll be a paranoid parent one day myself.
All in all, Taken is fun. Bryan is a likable character who just wants to know his daughter better. When she is stolen from him, he turns into a focused hunter and its fun to watch him take out the bad guys. I recommend the movie to anyone in the PG-13 range. The subject of the film isn’t light and kids will find nothing fun in the movie but teenagers and adults should enjoy it.
Remember, this is the Liam Neeson show. No one else in the film matters, only Bryan Mills. Neeson makes the movie believable through his acting a love for his daughter and that is why the movie was good, not the story, not the action but Neeson’s acting.
Until next time, don’t trust the French and watch out for those Critical Hits!
