Critical Hit - Push
Push
One push can change everything? I’m not sure about that but it will at least entertain you.
This is a super hero story about normal people who were experimented on and have formed super abilities. However, unlike most super hero type stories, Push tries to be a more focused and gritty take.
Nick Gant (Chris Evans) lives in crappy Hong Kong to keep away from a Division of the U.S. government that tracks people with abilities. He is a second generation mover (telekinetic powers) and is wasting his life trying to enhance his abilities because they are weak. One day a watch (future teller) Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning) shows up and fulfills a prophecy given to Grant by his father.
The entire movie involves a plot to find a secret case that holds the ability to take down the Division. Kira Hudson (Camilla Belle) shows up to be an important part of the Push and love interest for Grant. Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou) leads the Division and chases these people with powers even though he and others have similar powers but use them to help their corrupt government.
I felt like Push had a decent story but tried too hard to be too gritty. For one, the entire film takes place in Hong Kong for no apparent reason other than it’s a dirty, gritty town and would fit well in how Push was to be sold. Lots of shots were used in the film to make the screen gritty and dirty like it was shot on an old camera. These same shots were not used on a steady cam and were distracting because of their shaking all over the screen. There also were too many shots of people walking around and looking at stuff to extend the length with no point. Some of these shots can really add to a film but too many make it boring and I was taken out of the story after about the sixth one.
The acting was good. Evans did well as the lead and Fanning was great as a young girl who had to act like a grown up. There is a scene were she gets drunk (to enhance her powers) which is funny. Hudson did an alright job but spent most of the movie not saying or doing much more than looking around. Hounsou is a favorite actor of mine. I love his African accent but he seems to always play a bad guy.
All in all, if you like super hero movies or like gritty action dramas then you’ll enjoy Push but its just didn’t excite me like Batman or Ironman or even the Punisher did.
Until next time, keep an eye out for hovering guns and watch out for those Critical Hits!
