Ready 2 Rumble Revolution
The original Ready 2 Rumble title, released back in 1999, gave boxing fans hope of a new front running game series for their beloved pastime. But with similar titles that have appeared on the Wii suffering from bad controls, has Ready 2 Rumble Revolution fared any better than its competitors?
Before Ready 2 Rumble, boxing games and everything remotely similar too them appeared to take themselves all too seriously – which is certainly one thing that cannot be held against as the Ready 2 Rumble series, as it is anything but serious. However there is a very thin line between being a fan packed game, and being an outrageously ridiculous game and sadly Ready 2 Rumble Revolution has not only crossed that line, but taken a giant leap over it.
Straight forward bash ‘em up games have been few and far between in recent years, so fans of those games in particular will see Ready 2 Rumble Revolution as a welcome return for the genre, but unfortunately and much like the series original, how skilful a gamer you are will have absolutely no affect on the outcome of your fights in Ready 2 Rumble Revolution – and winning a fight will prove nothing but you got better luck than your opponent, or perhaps had a little more stamina on the day.
The game begins quite well to be honest, as you are able to create a fighter of your own with some good personalisation abilities at your disposal, and you can then enter your fighter into a single player championship tournament where you will fight against some familiar faces, all of which are completely unofficial but blatant parodies of real life personalities, including David Beckham – and it has to be said, smacking a mockery of Becks in the face repeatedly can be incredibly enjoyable!
However, attempting to land those repetitive blows to Becks or any other opponent for that matter is not so enjoyable. Like similar titles, Ready 2 Rumble Revolution fails to deliver consistently precise controls and it does not take long for this to become very, very frustrating indeed. The controls become more infuriating still when trying to defend yourself either with cover, or blocks, as neither are very effective unless motioned to absolute perfection which is so much easier said than done.
Graphically and audibly, Ready 2 Rumble Revolution is pretty much flawless, but you could be forgiven for expecting nothing less than stunning graphics from every title nowadays such is the console power at developers’ disposal. Great graphics are completely pointless, though; if the game play and control system do not let you enjoy those beautiful environments fully.
Ready 2 Rumble Revolution is one game that even boxing fans may want to give a miss, as it will leave you disappointed and you may end up losing interest in boxing for a while – it’s really that annoying! All the ingredients are here for a classic arcade styled beat ‘em up, but ultimately the controls let the game down, as they have done for numerous other boxing titles on the Wii.
