Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando has now been with us for a few days. It was very eagerly anticipated by games across the globe during the build up to it’s release, and the time has now come to find out whether the wait was worthwhile.
We will try to avoid spoiling it for those who have not yet got their copy of the game. Who are we kidding, no we won’t, instead we will come right out and say it - cancel your pre-order immediately, because sadly Bionic Commando fails to reach any of the heights it was tipped to hit.
For those of you who did not follow the build up to the release of Bionic Commando, it is a third-person action title with a science fiction subliminal environment that you somehow manage to feel disconnected from. The game does not feel very sci-fi, despite the fact you have bionic limbs and are beating the crap out of weird robotic-like enemies that cross your path.
At first glimpse of Bionic Commando you will be a little excited. The possibilities the storyline, the game environment and the graphics could open up to you are sadly not delivered when the gameplay kicks in and you ultimately feel disappointed and genuinely let down.
The large, and very visible game world that you are placed in looks very impressive in the first instance, but sadly this is a rare case of what you see, you can’t explore. The world around you serves only as a tease as you are forced to bypass huge parts of it as you follow a very dictated path through the game.
Where Bionic Commando does succeed is in the battle sequences, as you are able to put together some lethal and very brutal attacks which are immensely satisfying when executed perfectly, and the balance of getting them on the money is just right. It is challenging enough to get your money’s worth out of the game, but also easy enough to master the various attacks you can perform without reaching the point of frustration or attack repetition.
The decent attack system though does not do nearly enough to save Bionic Commando from being a shameful attempt at a modern day action title. There is frustration around every corner in the game, more often not in the form of a gorgeous looking part of the game world which you can not reach to enjoy properly, be it to behold the beauty of it or to destroy it during a nice, brutal battle with some mechanical spiders! Pass on this one, guys!
