Critical Hit - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth installment in the Harry Potter storyline which hit theaters this week. People seem to love or hate this story and I’m not referring to the Half-Blood Prince, but rather the Harry Potter story in whole. I am a fan. I’ve read the books and seen all the movies. I enjoy the movies but not nearly as much as the books but the last two movies have captured the essence of the books very well. The bottom line is that most books don’t translate well to the movie screen and is why they were books in the first place. Hollywood just has no creativity and has to steal from every print source they can. So, this is all I’ll say about the books and how they translate to the big screen as this is supposed to be a review about a movie.

The Half-Blood Prince is a dark tale about Harry and his friends attending their sixth and next to last year at Hogwarts. They are now the leaders and have to be careful as the Death Eaters and the Dark Lord are out and attempting to gain access to the school.

Strange happenings at the school lead Harry, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley into trouble as always. Meanwhile, teen awkwardness and love run chaos amongst the sixth years. Ginny Weasle, Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom are all around too. Harry suspects Draco Malfoy of odd behavior and follows him and ends up nearly kiling him with a spell from his potions book owned by the Half-Blood Prince.

Professor Albus Dumbledore has also been up to some secret traveling. He eventually reveals through a series of memories that he has brought Professor Horace Slughorn back to Hogwarts in order to grab a memory from him that will reveal a weakness of the Dark Lord.

All in all, the Half-Blood Prince is a great installment to the movie franchise. A lot of issues are resolved that I’m sure you’ve been waiting for but as those issues are resolved the battle lines are drawn. The true fight between the Dark Lord and Harry Potter begins and sets up for the last two movies. This is straight fantasy, good vs evil so if you like that stuff and you like Harry Potter, then you’ll have a good time with the Half-Blood Prince.
