Demon’s Souls is one of the most difficult videogames you will play this year, but if you’re a fan of any of the genre’s the game touches on then you’ll probably consider it one of the best too.

From the very beginning you are drawn into the game by the dark and seedy environment that your battles take place within - and though dark, they look and feel alive and you can’t help but become engrossed in the game and feel as if you are the lead character. Demon’s Souls is rare in the sense that there is very little narrative in the game, but you never get the feeling that you don’t know what you’re doing.

Demon’s Souls is a bit of everything, but at it’s most basic level it can be considered an action role playing game. The combat sequences are possibly the best part of the game, as the controls are easy to master, the attacks and defences available to you are imaginative without going over the top and everything happens at just the right pace.

Each of the worlds in the game, of which there are five, are packed full of various mutated creatures which all have a deep desire to kill you. You have your weapons, powerups and armour to protect you but you will find yourself dying time and time again. If you do die, you can make your way back to the location to reclaim your lost soul which will be sitting on your bloodstain - souls such as these, and others gained by slaying demons, are a valuable currency to you in Demon’s Souls.
