Guitar Hero Van Halen

Surprise surprise, it’s another Guitar Hero game and it’s hitting stores across the globe just before Christmas. But for possibly the first time when talking about Guitar Hero, we can honestly say you should save your money and not cough up for Guitar Hero: Van Halen.

No, I don’t just have something personal against Van Halen as a band – far from it – I fully appreciate their career which has spanned more than three decades, as well as the impact their music has had on that of other modern acts. The problems with Guitar Hero: Van Halen lay firmly at the feet of the developers and publishers.

Earlier this year Guitar Hero 5 was introduced, bringing with it the new entire band setup that was previously seen in Guitar Hero: On Tour as well as a complete graphical overhaul which i’m not afraid to say was very much needed. However Guitar Hero: Van Halen chooses to ignore those advances and takes you back to the old format of the series – as big a step backward in a game series as i’ve come across before.

If you just want to pickup the game and play along to the legendary Van Halen tracks then go ahead, you honestly can’t go far wrong, but the overall feel of Guitar Hero: Van Halen has somehow become out-dated and tired. It doesn’t feel like the insane rock-out that it should, and instead just feels like something you’ve played a million times before just with a slightly different sound.

It will be huge simply because it’s Guitar Hero combined with Van Halen, and fans of the series will take for granted that it will be just as good as Guitar Hero 5, but sadly that isn’t the case this time round.
