Splatterhouse is a re-invention of a classic title of the same name and is potentially the bloodiest game ever created. It’s likely to get banned in a few places, and when a game gets banned somewhere, it sells like crazy everywhere else!
The original Splatterhouse title was released for the TurboGrafx-16 way back in 1990 and quickly became one of the first video games to be slapped with a parental advisory warning because of it’s gore, zombies and monsters – times and tastes may have moved on since then but this latest Splatterhouse title from Namco Bandai follows in the originals footsteps by pushing the ‘taste’ boundaries of today’s gaming industry.
I should make one thing clear – my personal point of view is that banning video games and the mere suggestion that they can contain too much violence or gore is a ridiculous notion. A video game is, at the end of the day, a video game and nothing more. Splatterhouse will certainly keep you engrossed one way or the other, and at times you will want to look a way but will find yourself far too gripped to do so.
Crushing skulls, ripping out spines and mauling zombies is not everything in Splatterhouse – it does believe it or not offer something of a storyline to back up the violent action which dominates the game experience. You play as Rick, an ordinary guy who took refuge with his girlfriend in a twisted doctors mansion during a storm – but as an uninvited guest, Doctor West as he is known sets a host of mutated monsters after you – which are his own creations resulting from his twisted experiments.
You get wounded, your girlfriend gets kidnapped, and you discover a mask which not only heals you but gives you incredible powers and strength. Armed with this mask you must fight your way through the zombie infested mansion and save your girlfriend.
Splatterhouse is being developed for PC, Playstation 3 and XBox 360 and is scheduled for a third quarter 2010 release! Keep an eye out for more on Splatterhouse at E3 in two weeks!
