Remember Punch Out? Of course you do – well Swords is a little like that, only instead of boxing gloves you’re using, you guessed it, a sword! The concept is bizarre, but it somehow manages to be fun.

Swords, developed by Panic Button who have history with crazy Wii “party games”, puts you in the role of a young guy with a sword – we could say hero but we see nothing heroic going on here to be honest. The storyline is weak, but you do fight your way through for a reason which we’ll leave for your discovery as it’s not hugely exciting anyway.

Swords is exclusive to the Nintendo Wii and as you could probably guess, you control the game by holding your Wii remote vertically as if it was the handle of a sword, and hack and slash towards the screen. The basic motion sensor does a decent job of re-creating your movements but we can only truly recommend buying Swords if you already own or are prepared to buy the Wii MotionPlus too – that extra precision goes a long way!

We almost feel guilty calling this a review as there really is very little more to Swords that we haven’t already covered. You have a sword, you swing it around infront of you to kill the guys that you come up against! It’s basic, it’s weak, but somehow it is incredibly good fun which manages to last for quite a while.

As you progress through the game you will find additional combat modes which add a bit of variety to the game, but a game of this nature can only give you so much variety. You can also upgrade your swords by purchasing different blades, some of which have pros and cons when it comes to battle which gives you a little food for thought which the game generally lacks throughout.

Swords is out now for the Nintendo Wii, there’s not much too it, but we love it and think you will too! Recommended buy.
