Tristana is often misused and misunderstood in LoL where people argue what her true role is in the game. Some say she’s an assassin, while others see her as more of a carry and a pusher. What everyone can agree on though is that Tristana is a balanced and versatile champion who is easy to learn and fun to play with. Her ability to dictate the early game is one of the best in the game, as well as her mid-game threat, and absolute insanity in the late game.
She can gank, harass, push, and carry with great DPS, which makes her a solid carry. The only thing is that she is dependent on items in order to make the most of her, but it also makes her a tad more flexible. She is a quick and powerful solo pusher, so you can farm the gold for those items if you use her right while laning.
This guide may not cover everything you may need to know about this versatile character, but it may give a clue as to what you can do to turn the tides of battle. Most teams tend to not know how to recover quickly enough when one of their lanes gets broken through, especially if your team is caught in a fight. Tristana is one of those champions that can help teams survive grueling battles.
Tristana’s main role is to push on every lane and destroy towers to lead the charge towards the enemy base. Remember that while ganking enemy champions is a big part of the game, destroying the enemy Nexus is still the main objective of the game. Tristana is one of LoL’s best pushers, so user her to this effect.
When using Tristana, your role in teamfights is to stand behind your tank and shoot every enemy in sight. If one of them is escaping, don’t hesitate to use Rocket Jump to block him off and slow him down. You will most likely be the main target of the opposing team due to your usefulness, so keep calm and address every problem accordingly. Use Buster Shot to knock them while escaping. If you do it right, you can blast more than only one enemy champion away.
Teleport – Your presence in a lane is always crucial, and being able to get back into the action quickly is necessary. Therefore, this is a must for Tristana as she can continue to push after dying or buying something.
Flash – In addition to Rocket Jump, you can have Flash to instantaneously transport yourself to more advantageous positions, either your ganking or escaping. The longer you can keep enemies within your attack range, the better. This skill helps you keep them in your sights.
Exhaust – If your Rocket Jump is still cooling down or not enough, this can do well to slow escaping enemies down. However, Rocket Jump is usually enough most of the time, so maybe get this if you feel that you really need it.
Ghost – When things are going your way, you may not really need this since you’d have Flash. But if you up against some strong competition, this may be a good idea after all.
Draw a Bead – Increases Tristana’s attack range per level.
This passive is what makes Tristana such a good champion. That increasing attack range makes her very good for beginners as laning would be more forgiving. As you level up in the opening, you can harass and kill with ease by taking advantage of your extended range.
Rapid Fire – Tristana fires her weapon rapidly, increasing her attack speed for a short time.
This may be the first skill you want to max out as it is what brings in the damage. You can solo towers with this, so you’ll be in and out before the enemy team ganks you, and you’ll be yelling “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!” once that tower goes down.
Rocket Jump – Tristana fires at the ground to propel herself to a distant location, dealing damage and slowing surrounding units for 3 seconds where she lands.
This works best with Buster Shot. This is your chase and escape skill, letting you get in front of a retreating enemy champion to gank him good or jump away to get away from a mob of greedy mofos when you’re in danger.
Explosive Shot – When Tristana kills a unit, her cannonballs burst into shrapnel, dealing damage to surrounding enemies. Can be activated to deal damage to target unit over time, and reduce healing received.
This is the last thing you should max out, so just get it at level 1 first. The reason is that all you need is the splash damage and damage over time. Going beyond level 1 early on would only be a waste as level 1 is enough for farming and the DoT doesn’t increase at all by level.
Buster Shot – Tristana loads a massive cannonball into her weapon and fires it at an enemy unit. This deals magic damage and knocks the target back.
Tristana’s ultimate can be seen as a double utility skill. You can help in ganking with your teammates or taking out towers with the outright damage. You can also escape champions chasing you down by pushing them off with the knockback effect. That can also be used by shoving victims towards your teammates for easy ganking.
Berserker’s Greaves – +25% Attack Speed; UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 2
These should be your first purchase as you’ll need the movement and attack speed increase.
Malady - +25 Ability Power; +50% Attack Speed; UNIQUE Passive: Your physical attacks shred your target dealing 20 magic damage and lowering their magic resistance by 6. Magic resistance reduction stacks up to 4 times.
Perhaps having 2 or 3 of this should help you get the attack speed needed to take advantage of your range, so you can quickly destroy towers and push towards the enemy base. It can give you a great amount of HP with every hit, so you can lane longer and be nigh unkillable.
Madred’s Razors – +15 Damage; +23 Armor; UNIQUE Passive: 15% chance on attack to deal 500 damage to a minion.
Another key item for solo pushing, you can kill enemy minions quite easily with this. That passive effect makes sure that you last-hit minions 15% of the time, which gets even better with a 2.5 attack speed.
The Black Cleaver – +55 Attack Damage; +30% Attack Speed; UNIQUE Passive: Physical attacks reduce your target’s Armor by 15 for 5 seconds (maximum 3 stacks).
This is a great attack power boost for pushers as it takes armor out of the equation with every hit. This affects towers, minions, and players, which makes it an absolute must for Tristana.
Sword of the Divine – +60% Attack Speed; UNIQUE Passive: Every fourth attack deals 100 extra Magic Damage; UNIQUE Active: Your attacks cannot be dodged and you gain 30 Armor Penetration for 8 seconds. 40 sec cooldown.
This is a great replacement for a Malady as it does an excellent 100 magic damage for ever 4 hits, which can stack with a critical as well. High attack speed makes this effect better tenfold.
