Brink is a team based first person shooter, with some similar aspects to team fortress and battlefield bad company. There are a few basics you need to know about Brink before you can start running and gunning like a pro.
In game you will notice Command posts which are placed around the map in strategic locations. In order to interact with the command posts you need to activate them, once you have they will give everyone one your time a small buff. Command posts also allow you to change your class mid-game. There’s solider, engineer, medic and operative to choose from. You can also change your weapon load out from here and replenish your ammo.
Medics are about keeping your team mates alive, which they do by buffing health and dispensing heal-yourself-syringes; engineers build defensive turrets, place mines and defuse explosives. Operatives can take on an enemy’s disguise and hack into objectives and soldiers plant explosives and are your source of ammo supply on the fly.
A few more abilities to these classes are what separate each of them, but other than that there is no visual distinction and any body type or faction (resistance or security) can go any class.
Each map has a series of objectives you need to attack or defend, depending on which side you are on. You will need to access these command posts and change your class multiple times to win the round, as a Specific Class needs to complete these tasks to get closer to victory. Examples of these tasks are planting explosives, fixing objects or hacking.
Playing the game you can choose between the Campaign which puts the multiplayer maps into a specific order and creates a narrative. Free play allows you to pick any of these maps to play online or offline. Or there are Challenges to complete which run you through the class and objective basics that you’ll find in Brink ranging from parkour time trials to bot escort duty.
Each Challenge has you taking on bots and are worth doing just for the unlocks you gain. These unlocks allow you to modify your weapons to be more useful such as larger mags and better scopes you also unlock different character body types. Medium allows you to take the standard load out of guns, such as smg’s and assault rifles while still being able to leap over most obstacles and take moderate damage. The light body type only allows smgs and pistols with a low tolerance to damage but you have the most mobility. Finally the Heavy Bulks up your character and allows you to take bigger guns and absorb more damage, but limits your mobility. Again it is entirely up to you what body type you choose and the character you’re leveling can change body type at any time in the character customization tab.
Overall brink is a highly customizable fast paced shooter that gives you plenty of options to choose from. Tattoo’s, hockey masks and all other manner of clothing items are available for unlock via leveling. This freedom allows you to create a character that is quite unique and cater to your play style.
