Rage promises to be a expansive innovative First Person Shooter from the guys at id Software. In addition to the first person shooter elements Rage promises to provide a great vehicle combat mode as well. In fact when footage and screens starting showing up for Rage many thought vehicle combat was the base of the game.
These races in the game appear to be a way of gambling and betting in the post apocalyptic world.
Below are the different types of vehicles you will be driving around the ruined world.
Cuprino

This appears to be the basic default vehicle that will be customizable with mounted turrets and other various weapons. It is a muscle car with gatling guns, rocket launchers, and a battering ram attached to it. It appears to be a heavy armor vehicle with slower speeds but heavy armor.
Jetter

This vehicle looks to be a more personnel vehicle and resembles a ATV. It will be more mobile than the buggys but will also lack as much armor or firepower. It has a skull with wings painted on it, on the front it has the forks to a fork lift mounted as a battering ram. The Jetter lacks guns and armor but appears to be a starter vehicle to get players used to driving mechanics and the environment.
Buggy

This desert vehicle has two mounted guns and is like the modern day dune buggies. When getting the Anarchy Edition of Rage you receive the Rat Rod Buggy. It is the all around vehicle in the game it has high speed but weaker armor. Players can customize the paint job and other aspects of their buggy.
