The war between birds and pigs had been brewing since the dawn of time. Alright, maybe not, but Angry Birds had started, Pigs In Trees might just finish it. Whatever pigs had against birds, we’ll never really know other than anger and gluttony. But whether pigs were mostly at fault or not, there now have their own game courtesy of Pan Vision Games. How this game twists the expression “when pigs fly” will put a lot of people in their place as this is somehow related to the main premise of this game.

This game is about a pig who lives in a tree, which is already odd enough. Birds are trying to destroy his home for some reason, and he has to fight back in order to protect his home. From a top-down perspective, the objective is to shoot down all the birds that are coming to destroy your home. You can aim your tree turret at 360 degrees around you to defend, which is also a cause for frustration here. The difficulty in this game isn’t very forgiving or defined well enough, so you may turn to the lowest one and win most of the time, then start getting murdered when you up the ante for even just a bit.

The visuals is the first noticeable good point of this game, with clear colors to distinguish between on-screen elements. The top-down perspective may take some getting used to, but at least north is always north in this game. Despite its difficulty, it does have a tutorial that teaches about the basics of the game in a gradual manner, making the information easy to absorb. The 3D cinematic is also pretty entertaining, with a pig riding a plane and other stuff.

Sadly, you may not be able to do anything about the sensitivity of the aiming, especially when going for lock-on. It’s this twitchiness in the controls that may cost you combos in this game, and there’s no way that you can adjust it. Since you can get killed very quickly, despite having gone through many waves of attacking birds, it’s not for those who only want to win in games. You will die a lot here and learn how to respond quickly to in-game threats. While the gameplay is solid in general, there are times when make a slight mistake like a slip of the finger while firing, you may just get hit once and die.

This game shows that both casual and hardcore gamers can all get together and play a game that has good entertainment value and competitive basis for skill at the same time. Even though it may be a difficult game to master, it does make the learning process fun. Killing birds rarely had been so much fun in games, especially if you’ve played the original Duck Hunt before (with that cursed snickering dog), so this game is a pretty good counter against that now-popular mobile game franchise. If you want something that you can compare against Angry Birds with, then this is the game to buy if you can spare a dollar.
