Twin stick shooters descended from the basic gameplay of Asteroids and have evolved into skill-based gameplay that combines simplicity in design with solid gameplay that’s simply fun. For the iPhone, what made this a good genre was Geometry Wars, which then spawned a lot of titles coming in to fill that void. Chillingo has also made their own twin stick shooter with Infinity Field, and they’ve done quite well with it.
The gameplay itself is the strongest part of the game indeed. Whenever you get the upgrades, it gets exciting as big things do tend to happen. They are especially necessary for the boss fights, where your skills and reflexes will surely be tested. The controls are responsive and right on point, letting you go where you exactly want to end up. You definitely need that when you’re surrounded by those little orange beasties and you have to take tight turns in order to evade while shooting them.
There are various game modes to occupy you, including the campaign and a survival mode that has various sub-modes like unarmed, snake, zombie, insane, and so on. These sub-modes have various twists to the basic gameplay, letting you have more fun with this game. You move around with the left stick and you aim and fire with the right, taking out as many of those orange things as you can. You can then get multipliers as you kill more of them and get those crucial upgrades.
Infinity Field looks quite good with smooth 2D graphics and moderate effects that blend together quite nicely. The black space comes to life as bursts of light and color come up when you shoot them down. There is a lot of drama, but not too much frustration at all visual-wise. You can still dodge most of those orange things and not get killed with a good amount of finesse, despite all the flashy stuff on the screen. There may be one hiding in all those effects, but it shouldn’t be a problem with the proper technique. Of course, there will always be one that just hides in the colors really well and will get you, and that’s merely a part of the challenge in this game.
There aren’t really any weak points in this game, but nitpickers will take one or two into account. Perhaps there may have been more music added into the game, but it’s not too bad. But most of all, as a lot of people who do play quite a bit of iOS games would see from this game, it’s almost exactly like Geometry Wars. It does get pretty blatant to the point of mimicry, so it can’t be too good for this game’s chances in originality. But with the quality of its execution, Infinity Field being a mere clone is a moot point.
While a clone of Geometry Wars, it’s still a very good one at that. Infinity Field is a well-made twin stick shooter with a definite edge over the rest. For only $0.99, you can get good value for your money with this game.
