Return to Top New Harry Potter Game

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Hollywood is still looking to cash in on the Harry Potter bandwagon, good news for Potter fans.  Warner Bros, along with J.K. Rowling, has recently announced “an expanded creative partnership.”  This means there will be a new movie on the adventures of Harry Potter based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  This also means there will be a new game to accompany the movie.

Rowling explained that “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.  The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

It may be a while before we actually see either the movie or the game as there currently is no set date on the film or the game.

Return to Top The Scarecrow

New game from fast food franchise

Proving that just about anyone can jump on into the world of video games, Chipolte Mexican Grill coupled with Moonbot Studios to bring us a new adventure game for iOS devices called The Scarecrow.”

The games tells the story of a scarecrow and his drive “to bring wholesome food back to the people.”  It takes place in a dystopian fantasy world where the industrial giant Crow Foods controls all food production.  Chipotle’s description of the game states “The Crow Foods factory is staffed by scarecrows who have been displaced from their traditional jobs on the farm and are now relegated to working for the crows by helping them maintain their unsustainable processed food system.”

The game uses tilt-based physics and optional touch controls as you dodge obstacles to help save vegetables, plant crops and rescue animals.  There is said to be 20 levels across four different worlds.

Chipotle will be giving away free buy-one-get-one burrito offers to the first million gamers who can get at least three stars on each level of the game.  The game is free to download at the App Store.

Return to Top Dead Rising 3

Biggest world ever

The Dead Rising series, which started out with you just slaughtering the undead at a shopping mall, has grown up.  Capcom Vancouver explains that they have big aspirations for Dead Rising 3, which they claim will feature an open-world much bigger than the first two games, combined.  In fact, it will be so big that you won’t be able to venture across the world on foot, you will need to use a vehicle for much of the game.

If you are concerned that this means the game has turned into Grand Theft Zombie, never fear, you will still be able to perform the game’s signature combo weapon system to vehicles.

Additionally, Dead Rising 3 will be the first in the Dead Rising series to will eliminate load screens in-between areas.  According to Josh Bridge the executive producer, “We wanted to go truly open-world this time around. No more load screens. With the biggest world that we’ve been able to make, with loads of zombies.”

Dead Rising 3 is an Xbox One exclusive and will launch alongside the next-gen console on November 22nd.

Return to Top Kingdoms of Amalur’s Rights

Going up for auction

You may recall that last year 38 Studios, which gave us one of my favorite games, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, basically experienced a cataclysmic implosion.  Currently the rights for Amalur are held by the state of Rhode Island following the studio’s closure and bankruptcy.

Richard Land, the court-appointed receiver for 38 Studios, stated that both the Copernicus and the Amalur IPs will go on sale in auction “soon.”  He explained that “The process is taking longer than we anticipated for a variety of reasons including the complexity of the game itself. We have engaged an auctioneer and they are developing an Internet marketplace – or website – to market the game.”

Sometime this month the web auction is expected to go live.  Land states “We’ve had other interested parties that we have been working with directly.” The auction will also include the “portfolio of games from Big Huge Games that [the state] inherited.”

Return to Top Cortana vs. Siri

Halo’s Cortana is Siri’s competitor

It seems that Microsoft is prepping voice command software that will compete with Apple’s Siri and Android’s Google Now.  They are calling the software Cortana after Halo’s AI compainion.  Cortana “will be able to learn and adapt, relying on machine-learning technology and the “Satori” knowledge repository powering Bing.”

It has been reported that Cortana will be “core” to future versions of Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One.  Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, made what we suspect was a reference to Cortana back in July when he mentioned “a family of devices powered by a service-enabled shell.”  According to Ballmer that shell isn’t going to simply surface information that is stored in your phones, PCs or consoles, it “will support the experiences layer and broker information among our services to bring them together on our devices in ways that will enable richer and deeper app experiences.”

Cortana hasn’t yet been officially announced or even confirmed by Microsoft, but we do know that Windows Phone currently includes basic voice commands, plus, Microsoft has already vamped up the voice capabilities of Kinect for the Xbox One.  Once we get more information on Cortana we will be sure to pass it on.

Return to Top Pokémon X and Y

Pyroar revealed

Pyroar is an evolution of Litleo that was recently revealed by the Pokémon Company for Pokémon X and Y.  Pyroar is a fire and normal-type Royal Pokémon whose abilities include Rivalry and Unnerve and has “a great mane of burning flames.”

Pyroar is also able to learn the Normal-type move Echoed Voice “which makes its power grow with every turn. Its power will increase even if other Pokémon use it, so try Echoed Voice out with your allies in Double Battles and Triple Battles to experience its real value.”

Litleo, the Pokemon which Pyroar evolves from, was revealed in June having a new move for the series, Noble Roar, which lowers the Attack stat of its target.

On October 12th Pokemon X and Y will launch for the 3DS.  As more is revealed prior to launch we will keep you informed.

Return to Top Peach Joins Smash Bros.

For the Wii U and 3DS

According to a recent announcement by Nintendo, Peach will be joining the Smash Bros roster for the Wii U and 3DS.  She and 14 other characters have been confirmed for the highly anticipated brawler releasing next year.

Other than the 1999 N64 original Smash Bros game, Peach has been featured in every Smash Bros game version.  The Wii U and 3DS version will be launching next year.

Return to Top Xbox One

Playable this month

While the Xbox One won’t be launching until late November, beginning this week gamers have the opportunity to get some hands-on experience with the next-gen console at the Microsoft Stores.

The recently announced Xbox One Tour: Road to Launch begins in New England and will make stops across the U.S. and Canada.  The Tour kicked off at the grand opening of the Microsoft Store in Burlington, Vermont on September 19th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.   You will be able to get a little play time in with Killer Instinct and Forza Motorsport 5 during the event.  Additionally, those in attendance will be able to get $25 off of a $75 purchase at the store, although sadly this does not include the Xbox One, Xbox One accessories, or Surface and Surface accessories.

The next stop on the tour will be in Boston Massachusetts on September 20th at the Shops at Prudential Center from 7:30 to 9:00 pm.   Other stops on the tour include Microsoft stores located in Edmonton, Canada; Orlando, Florida; and Scottsdale, Arizona.  All of the events are free to the public, but do be warned, you should expect some “large crowds” according to Microsoft’s forecasts.
