Nintendo ends production
The best selling home console for Nintendo will soon be but a memory. It has recently been revealed that Nintendo will end production of their motion-controlled system, the Wii. Nintendo’s Japanese product page says that manufacturing has ended, so once the current stock sells out, the console will be no more.
The Wii console debuted during the 2006 holiday season and became an instant hit with families across the world. The console launched bundles with Wii Sports and at last report (June 2013) has sold over 100.04 million units.
The Wii’s most successful games tended to be Nintendo exclusive titles, yet it did make a huge influence on the video game industry. Maybe there would have been the development of Kinect for the Xbox 360 at some point, but the success of the Wii’s motion control system likely helped speed Kinect’s birth.
How do you feel about saying good bye to the Wii? What effect, if any, do you think this will have on the Wii U?
The fast-paced online shooter from Respawn Entertainment and EA will launch on March 11th, 2014 for the Xbox 360, PC, and the Xbox One. Several former members of Infinity Ward who brought us Call of Duty, are working on the game.
Titanfall puts you within a futuristic war where you can fight as either agile jetpack-equipped infantry or as titan, two-story mechs. The game blends campaign and multiplayer modes by making the online match a dynamic part of a wider narrative.
The game was first hinted at by Respawn back in 2011 when they teased Titanfall’s development, its first reveal happened through leaks in June.
If you have $250 to spend you may want to check out the Titanfall Collector’s Edition, which is currently available for pre-order. The package comes with a 190 page art book, a titan schematic poster, and an 18-inch Atlas titan statue with diorama and battery-powered LED lighting.
Update fixes online problem
As an Xbox 360 gamer, have you found yourself unable to play your copy of PES 2014 online? If so, you may be in luck. According to Konami, the latest patch for the game “remedies all online issues affecting the Xbox 360 version of PES 2014, restoring full online functionality to the game.”
The company went on to say that “Konami is extremely grateful for the patience and understanding shown by PES 2014 users affected by the issues. Further DLC updates created to bolster the performance of the acclaimed football title will also be announced shortly.”
Additionally, Konami has reported that the full 11 vs. 11 online mode is currently in beta and is planned for availability within the coming weeks. A new data pack that includes over 800 player face updates as well as updates and improvements in the rosters, all of which is based upon player feedback, will be released in November.
Coming next year
Recently Maxis and EA announced that sometime in the fall of next year The Sims 4 will be launching and pre-orders for the PC game are officially open.
The Life of the Party pack is available for free for those who pre-order the Limited Edition of the game. Additionally, the Origin-exclusive Digital Deluxe edition includes the Up All Night bonus content.
A new drag-and-drop Sim editor and construction tools that are easier to use have been added to the Sims 4 game. Additionally, Sims will be influenced by their shifting emotions, meaning they can either let their moods control them or gamers can help them capitalize on their moods.
Now out for Android
Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time has finally been released, worldwide, for Android. You may recall that we had reported a “soft launch” in New Zealand and Australia earlier this month. PvZ 2 builds off of the original that was launched back in 2009. There are fresh new visuals, plant food, plants, and yes of course Zombies. There are a number of worlds within which you can play, such as Ancient Egypt, Wild West, and Pirate Seas. Some of the new plant food will allow you to supercharge your turrets.
Tony Leamer, PopCap’s business director, recently said ” If you look at the way PopCap develops games, we start with one platform and get it right. With this game we started with mobile, and specifically iOS. That’s only the beginning. As you saw with Plants vs. Zombies, the first game came out on PC first. It wasn’t even on mobile until almost a year later. The approach we’re taking with PvZ 2 is similar, where we want to get it right on the first platform, make sure we’re delivering a great experience. But could we see this experience extending to lots of other platforms going forward? Absolutely.”
While the game is free to download, you could end up spending a fair amount of money on extras, although you really don’t have to at all. In fact, the game is probably better if you don’t, especially if you are getting it for the challenge. One reviewer stated “This is a remarkable sequel, one that takes its predecessor not as a template, but a jumping-off point. And for all the justifiable concern about its chosen business model, its implementation of the free-to-play model prizes players’ hearts above the contents of their wallets.”
Pulled from Steam and GOG
Almost as quickly as it went up, it came down. Last week Dark Matter, a survival-horror sci-fi platformer, was pulled from Steam and Good Old Games after only being available on both services for about a week. The reason for the quick snatch from the sites had to do with complaints over its abrupt and “unsatisfying” ending.
Recently Erik Schreuder, Iceberg Interactive CEO, posted in the Steam Community that the company was working on “a more conclusive and satisfying ending” for the game. However, it was recently reported that nearly the whole studio was laid off in July and August following a Kickstarter failure. The Company is now only working with a skeleton crew of management.
According to Schreuder, Dark Matter was supposed to be converted into an episodic series following the Kickstarter failure. Sales from the first episode was to be used to cover the development cost of future episodes. Clearly that plan never transpired and the game was released with no mention at all of an episodic structure. Not that it would have mattered since there just isn’t anyone left in the company to make more episodes. Currently an unnamed external developer is working on the game’s ending.
Coming to PS3
On January 14th PS3 gamers will have access to Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD through the PlayStation Store. Ubisoft recently announced that not only have the missions and their pacing been touched up and improved, but the visuals are much improved from those seen on the PS Vita.
Ubisoft expects that many of the bugs that plagued the Vita version will be cleaned up. They have also added fifteen new missions. The missions are all dedicated to Aveline’s three distinct personas; lady, servant, and assassin.
Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD will cost about $20 when it releases. Additionally, if you have a desire to get back with Aveline before Liberation’s release, the PS3 and PS4 editions of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will have exclusive missions where she is the star.
Supporting use of real names
You may recall that last week we announced that Microsoft would not be including real life names on LIVE, at least when the Xbox One first launches. They do plan to include the ability to use your real name later on. Now we have news that Sony has no intention of limiting users abilities to throw their real name out for all to see. The PS4 will give you the option to use your real name online at launch.
Currently consoles like the PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360, only let you use your gamer tag to identify you. And frankly, I believe that is just fine .. and so much safer over all. For the first time ever, consoles will let you be seen by the online public using the name your parents gave you. Why would anyone want to put their real name out there in an environment that can be hostile to begin with? Do we really think this is going to eliminate bullying and abuse? It doesn’t in real life, why would it in our game lives? I simply don’t view this as a positive. And yes, I will stoop so low as to say “I told you so” when the first story comes out of someone getting hurt in real life due to having their personal information available to some freak. My advice, opts out of the option to use your real name and keep yourself safe and happy.
If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber in Europe you will have access to the Dark Souls II beta test on Sunday Oct. 27th but do be quick because it will only be open between 7am and 10am GMT. The intention of the beta is to stress test the online servers for the game. If you are interested in participating you will need to download the necessary files through the PlayStation Store.
North and South American gamers who were able to get a pass code through the Dark Souls II Facebook page will also be able to participate in the test by redeeming their code. Sadly, those pass codes have already been distributed.
The full game will launch sometime in March of 2014.
The final file size
It wasn’t that long ago that Sony described Killzone: Shadow Fall as an “uber-file” and now we have confirmation on just what they meant. According to Guerrilla Games, the final file size for the European version of Killzone: Shadow Fall is 39.7GB. Other versions will be closer to 37GB. Just to compare, according to Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Ghosts will require 40GB of hard drive space on your PC.
Michiel van der Leeuw, technical director for Guerrilla Games, recently explained that the main reason for the huge file size was because of the art, saying, “the bulk of it is textures. I think we’re probably a lot larger than the other cross-generation games, because we have no assets that have been made to a lower spec.” He also pointed toward the game’s more open levels, “The surface area, I’m just guessing here, must be five to 10 times bigger than Killzone 3 was.”
Sony’s new PlayGo system will allow you to begin playing the game before the whole game is downloaded. According to van der Leeuw, if you have a “decent” internet connection, you should be able to start playing the first level, which involves 7.5GB, within the first evening and have the full game downloaded by the next morning. “Realistically, I think a lot of people can do this… It’s just that the initial chunk of 7.5GB is quite big. I think if we would have known exactly how everything would work… I think next time around we’ll try to see if we can design something that doesn’t jeopardize the game which will make it even friendlier.”
Killzone: Shadow Fall is a PS4 launch title which will be available in North America on November 15th and in Europe on November 29th.
Coming to Target stores
Since its launch, Ouya has partnered with Target, however, the little consoles were only available at a few of their stores. This month, Target stores across the United States will begin to stock Ouya consoles. In the early months of next year Target, and perhaps a few other retailers, will feature demo kiosks for the system.
Some of the games that may be offered at the Ouya demo kiosks include Fist of Awesome, Towerfall, and Clark.
Additionally, according to Julie Uhrman, Ouya CEO, reports that starting next month Target will be promoting the Ouya via an in-store video trailer and offering a $10 game card with the purchase of the console. Uhrman adds that Ouya is in discussion with other large retailers such as Walmart to offer the console.
There hasn’t yet been any confirmation on just how many units have sold since the Ouya micro-console officially launched last June.
Who is winning so far?
The digital intelligence firm Compete had commissioned an online shopper study to look at the pre-launch interest in the PS4 and the Xbox One. What the study concluded was that interest in the PS4 is exceeding the interest in the Xbox One by a 2 to 1 margin.
The study was conducted between June and September this year, although the specific methodology details haven’t been provided. The study found that three out of four next-gen console shoppers considered the PS4, 12 percent of those were considering purchasing both consoles and 61 percent considered the PS4 only. With regards to those considering the purchase of an Xbox One console, the study only found 27 percent of those taking part in the study interested in only the Xbox One console.
According to Matt Pace, Millward Brown Digital’s president, when retailers began taking pre-orders for the consoles in June there was a lot of interest in both, however, as time has gone on, enthusiasm for both consoles among online shoppers has taken a plunge. September’s interest dropped 52 percent since the initial spike in interest in June, although Pace expects this to turn around. “With marketing now picking up, one of the first salvos being Sony’s tie-in with Taco Bell, consumer interest in the consoles will soon rise in anticipation of the launches.”
The PS4 will launch in North America on November 15th and will cost $400, while the Xbox One will launch on November 22nd and cost $500.
Launch date announced
According to a recent announcement by Ubisoft, Rayman Fiesta Run will launch on November 7th for iOS and Android devices. For $2.99 you will get the game with 75 levels, four new worlds, new power-ups, and new abilities such as shrinking and swimming.
Fiesta Run is the follow-up to Rayman Jungle Run which was one of the top 25 iOs and Android games.
