Massive update coming
Just a short time after Sony announced that the PS4 sold over 7 million units, they announced the upcoming firmware update for the console. According to Scott McCarthy, director of brand marketing at Sony, firmware 1.70 should have additions that make PS4 owners happy because it has “features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback.”
One of the features, called SHAREfactory, is a “new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos.” You will be able to upload your SHAREfactory edited videos directly to Facebook or put them on an external USB connected storage device.
Another feature will allow you to download games early, letting you pre-load the games that you pre-order giving you immediate access to new games when they launch. This saves you the download time just before you actually sit down to play the game. Now you can download the game several days prior to launch and play the game the second it launches.
There is no confirmation just yet on when the firmware will be available, but you can read more about it in McCarthy’s post on the PlayStation blog.
The Xbox 360, PS3, and PS Vita versions of Terraria recently received a massive update according to developer Re-Logic. The same update was released for the PC last October.
Update 1.2 includes many graphical enhancements, bug fixes, new recipes and items, and new bosses. A few of the changes include, crafting early game magic robes and staves, blizzards and rain was added, there are eight new friendly NPCs, and chests are now graphically tailored to the biomes they are in.
For a full list of the fixes, changes and additions you can go to the official Terraria forums.
Sony offered Vita version
Sony had offered to develop a PS Vita version of Titanfall prior to revealing the PS4 version. Back in 2012 when Respawn had talked with Sony about the PS4, trying at that time to understand just what the hardware was going to be about. However, Sony wasn’t interested in revealing that information at that time. They did offer to help Respawn develop a version of Titanfall (called R1 at that time) for the PS Vita.
Jon Shiring, Titanfall programmer, stated that he was “concerned about Sony’s lack of disclosure” so the team moved forward on working with Microsoft’s Durango (the code name for the Xbox One).
So as a result of their secrecy, Sony’s gamers lost out on the ability, at least for now, to play Titanfall on any PlayStation console, including the PS Vita. We hope that eventually the game will find its way into the consoles and hearts of Sony gamers.
The Golf Club, currently available through Steam Early Access, is being called a “highly realistic” golf game by its Canadian developer, HB Studios.
The game is still planned for launch on the Xbox One and PS4, however, neither console supports in-development games like Steam does. The game will support 1 to 4 players for local “couch multiplayer.” It also has an asynchronous online multiplayer mode that allows you to compete against “ghost balls” or “live balls” from other gamers.
Unlike EA’s professional golf series, The Golf Club has “no loading times” between holes and it features a Course Creator tool which lets you build and share courses with your friends. There won’t be actual PGA Tour professionals or courses in the game but if you are a fan of golf, you are in for something special with this game .. enjoy!
Coming to Vita
Two old Silent Hill titles will be released for the PS Vita according to a recent announcement by Konami. Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. We don’t have dates yet but are expecting them soon.
Regarding the series Konami stated, “The Silent Hill series enjoys a stunning reputation for innovation and terror, and these re-issues will introduce a new generation of users to its terrifying secrets.”
Both games were previously available on the PSP. It appears the games will be available on Vita in Europe, but there currently isn’t any word on if they will be available in North America. We will let you know when word comes down about a North American release.
Pre-order goodies and more
If you pre-order Wolfenstein: The New Order on Steam you will be getting two Team Fortress 2 items, a helmet called Der Maschinensoldaten-Helm and armor called Die Regime-Panzerung. In addition to these snazzy new items you will also get access to the upcoming Doom beta when it is released.
Besides being available on the PC, Wolfenstein: The New Order will launch for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 on May 20th.
When the game launches it will be censored in Germany. According to Pete Hines, Bethesda’s marketing executive, “they have a thing about Nazis there. They’re a little touchy, and so [the Nazis] are called the Regime in Wolfenstein in Germany and it’s actually…I’m pretty sure this is the first Wolfenstein game that will ever be released in Germany, but it’s completely stripped of all the constitutionally banned content.”
What Hines is referring to as “constitutionally banned content” is likely the imagery that is typically associated with Nazis such as swastikas. Ubisoft had similar problems with their German version of South Park: The Stick of Truth.
Fable franchise manager leaves
Tim Timmins, the manager of the Fable franchise and worked on every one of the role-play games in the series, has left Lionhead Studios. He announced his departure on Twitter stating, “I’ve decided to leave Lionhead. This was a really tough decision, as I’ve had such an amazing time here.” Later he tweeted, “And it’s worth pointing out that I have nothing but positives to say about working for Xbox, I shall return a better game designer one day!”
Lionhead was Timmins first industry job when he was just an 18-year-old newbie. He started working on the original Fable for the Xbox in 2004 and has worked on every game in the series since.
Timmins hasn’t yet announced what his future plans are but we know we will be seeing some great things from him in the future. He did offer up a clue when he tweeted, “Now I get to return to where I began, as a Project Ego and Xbox fanboy! #BePreparedWorld”.
Best of luck to ya Tim! Lionhead Studios lost a legend when you walked out the door.
Snoop Dogg on DLC
Rapper Snoop Dogg was recently recruited by Activision to perform voiceover work for the next DLC for Call of Duty: Ghosts. Snoop Dogg’s voice will be part of the voice pack that will launch on Xbox Live April 22nd. The pack will launch for other platforms shortly after.
While Infinity Ward wrote the lines for the rapper, he states that he was happy he could add his own “Snoopisms” to the phrases. Some of the phrases in the voice pack are “Homies out the joint. It’s party time”, “Don’t stop. Cap ‘em and shank ‘em” and “Squad member active: A brother from another mother.”
With regards to the partnership, Snoop Dogg stated, “What interests me most about the project is that my voice could be connected with a game that’s so hip and so hood. It says alot. It’s associated with greatness.”
Last year Snoop Dogg launched his own video game titled Way of the Dogg. He also was recruited by Ubisoft to do an announcement for the release of Rayman Legends and he paid some respect to Pokemon in one of his new music videos. So Snoop Dogg is no stranger to video games.
In addition to Snoop Dogg, R. Lee Ermey, best known as the drill sergeant in the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, will also contribute to the Drill Instructor voice pack. Various character and weapon packs will also be launching on the same day.
Free on Xbox Gold
Tequila Works’ survival horror zombie platformer, Deadlight, developed in 2012, is now available for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. You can download the free game as part of Microsoft’s Games with Gold promotion from now until April 30th. Hitman: Absolution was offered during the beginning of the month.
The Games with Gold promotion was announced during last year’s E3 media briefing. A similar service will be offered on Xbox One, however, Microsoft hasn’t stated just when the program will begin.
Hardest difficulty mode ever
Recently Naughty Dog announced the Grounded Bundle for the PS3′s The Last of Us. This is the third and final expansion for the game and is included in the game’s season pass. It includes some new additions to the game’s single-player and multiplayer modes.
For the single-player mode you can now choose a difficulty option titled Grounded Mode. According to Naughty Dog, this is the “hardest challenge you’ll ever face. The AI is relentless, smart, and brutal, and survival will be near impossible.” So if you like a challenge that beats out all other challenges, this mode is for you. If you complete Grounded Mode you earn yourself the “Completed Grounded Mode” trophy.
If you didn’t get the season pass, you can pick up the DLC for $5. The bundle also includes the Reclaimed Territories Map Pack, introducing four new maps, Coal Mine, Water Tower, Wharf, and Capitol. Each of the maps are based on an area in the single-player campaign and offers up six trophies. The Reclaimed Territories Map Pack will be separate for those who don’t have the season pass and will cost $10.
Within the Grounded Bundle are also new guns and survival skills. The Survivalist Weapon Bundle includes four new weapons, the Enforcer, Launcher, Specter, and Double Barrel. The Survivalist Weapon Bundle will cost you $6 if you don’t have the season pass.
Here is the best part, all Last of Us gamers can get a free download of a new gun, the Full-Auto Rifle. Naughty Dog states that it is “very easy to use,” and is aimed at the newcomers to the game. Seasoned veterans will also find it enjoyable to use however.
You can still pick up a $20 season pass until May 13th. After that the pass will no longer be offered and you will pay full price for all the game’s downloadable content (DLC).
New Microsoft game?
It was recently discovered that on April 9th Microsoft filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a new game titled Screamride. The application was lodged under “entertainment services, namely, providing an online computer game.”
GameSpot had contacted Microsoft regarding the application and was told that the company “often acquires various trademarks as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment.”
Secrets and Treasures and Snap Attack are the titles for games which Microsoft has filed a trademark application for over the past few months. It is possible that there will be a few more announcements than just the expected Halo announcement during Microsoft’s pre-E3 conference on June 9th. E3 2014 will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center and will run from June 10th through the 12th.
