Duplicity

This ain’t just a love story about two spies, folks. Duplicity is a story of corporate warfare between two huge companies and you’re going to love it.

Duplicity is a wonderfully done story of backstabbing. Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and Ray Koval (Clive Owen) both work for each company in their intelligence department. The heads of the companies, Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) and Richard Garsik (Paul Giamatti) hate one another and want to trash their one major competitor in the soap business, each other. Yes, the companies both make lotions, creams and soaps. This adds to the hilarity. Keep in mind that while the entire story is serious business dealing with huge money, it’s a very hilarious take on things. (more…)

KnowingKnowing Movie Poster

Now here is a strange film that will leave you with plenty to talk about afterwards but has no real substance.

Knowing is about a time capsule that is opened after sitting for 50 years. Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury) receives a drawing from a student that is supposed to represent what they believe the future to look like. Instead, Caleb gets a piece of paper filled with numbers. His father, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) is a professor at MIT (more…)

Critical Hit - Watchmen

Watchmen

Who watches the Watchmen? I did, duh!Watchmen

Here is a very brief description of the film. Watchmen is based on the popular graphic novel set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of everyday society, and the Doomsday Clock, which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union, moves closer to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) sets out to investigate, and is reunited with his surviving old colleagues, all of them former superheroes themselves. Together, they unveil a conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future.

Alright? Sounds fun right, well let me explain a few things before you rush out to see Watchmen. First of all, Watchmen is rated R for a reason. It’s a very graphic film so if you don’t like lots of brutality then you should pass. The language is heavy as well and there is even a sex scene but the most important part is that Watchmen is depressing. This isn’t Marvel’s positive outlook on life, this is a very realistic yet depressing look at an alternate 1985 and what could have been. (more…)

Critical Hit - The International

The International

The InternationalHere’s a scary movie for me. I’m not sure if you have been paying attention to what’s going on in the world with the economy and the banks but this film is a scary look at how one bank could take control of a ton of the world. How? Well…

The IBBC, International Bank of Business and Credit, are slowly taking over the world by controlling money and having a deal with China who can produce the cheapest small fire arms in the world. 90% of the world’s conflicts use small fire arms because of the poverty in those countries. The IBBC funds not only guns for the conflicts but any money needed so that they can control the debt from that country. (more…)

Critical Hit - Push

Push

PushOne push can change everything? I’m not sure about that but it will at least entertain you.

This is a super hero story about normal people who were experimented on and have formed super abilities. However, unlike most super hero type stories, Push tries to be a more focused and gritty take.

Nick Gant (Chris Evans) lives in crappy Hong Kong to keep away from a Division of the U.S. government that tracks people with abilities. He is a second generation mover (telekinetic powers) and is wasting his life trying to enhance his abilities (more…)

Critical Hit - Coraline

February 16, 2009 By: GrandMaster Category: General, Movie Talk No Comments →

A story based off the Neil Gaiman book and made into a Henry Selick. CoralineYou may remember Monkeybone, James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Yup, it’s a clay-mation movie that isn’t directed by Tim Burton. For some reason, a lot of people think that because these movies have a darker side to them they must be Burton films but really, they aren’t. These are all on Henry Selick.

Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) moves into a new apartment complex with her parents. Coraline misses her friends and is bored out of her mind as she waits for summer vacation to end and school to begin. Coraline wants something to do so she pleads with her Mother (Teri Hatcher) but she is too busy editing a gardening book. Her Father (John Hodgman) is too busy writing up the same book. (more…)

Critical Hit - The Pink Panther 2

February 15, 2009 By: GrandMaster Category: General, Movie Talk No Comments →

Pink Panther 2Steve Martin returns as Insp. Jacques Clouseau in the sequel of the remakes of the Pink Panther and I was excited about it. Was 2 as good as the first? Read on and you’ll find out.

To set this up allow me to say that I loved The Pink Panther. I grew up and saw the original Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers and loved them. They were silly but witty with plenty of slap stick and are classics in my heart. When I heard they were remaking these films I was angry (as I HATE remakes) and happy (as they were remaking a franchise of films that I loved).
