Gamers (who are doubling as college students) of the world, take heed; do not download games while inside your designated campus dorms.

BBC reported earlier that Tollbar Business and Enterprise College (located at Station Road, New Waltham, Grimsby, UK) suspended 74 students from downloading a game from the internet (the name of the game was not revealed).

The actual downloading of the game was done in public computer units, available for everyone’s use. There are around 1000 computers provided by the school for educational purposes. The principal of the college, David Hampson, decided that the students should be suspended for breaching the IT Policy.

A lot of students feel understandably shocked, if not outraged, to the extremes that this whole issue reached. First off, the principal, if not anyone from their staff, should have at least named the game downloaded by the students. Most campus IT policies state that only downloading ILLEGAL content can warrant such heavy punishments, such as suspension (which all the students received, no word yet when it will be lifted).

Taken from the UC Berkeley website (http://www.berkeley.edu), this IT policy states “Campus computer use and network access is a privilege, and requires that individual users act responsibly. Users must respect the rights of other users, respect the integrity of the systems, data, and related physical resources, and observe all relevant laws, regulations, and contractual obligations”. We searched for laws and regulations from campus websites stating specifically that games are not allowed, but we failed to find such. Mostly copyrighted materials are not allowed.

Although, some IT Policies specifically states that if the integrity and performance of the network is compromised by the student’s internet activity, the school has the right to act against the student. Games, as we all know, take up lots of space and bandwidth. There are actually hardware developments for the needs of gamers alone, as the traditional hardware (normally for office and academic uses) cannot satisfy and keep up with the modern gamer’s needs.

(Oh yeah, we tried looking for the IT Policy of Tollbar in their website, but we failed to find it online.)

All the frustration from the university or campus based gamers would be considerably eased if the issue is further detailed.

Almost everyone is dead crazy over Wii, and it shows. The Wii console took the market by storm ever since it was first revealed back in September 2005, and a couple of years forward, and it is still a force to reckon with. Even the head honcho of the gaming console industry, PS, and the previous second most popular console, Xbox, could not do much to deter the fresh and undeniably creative idea behind the Wii.

But is it time for the superbly popular Wii to take a bow, and make way for the others?

Let’s face it. One of the biggest challenges and hurdles that game companies and their employees face is the fact that many people believe that obsessive gaming can have some MAJOR effects on a person’s health. Due to the lethargic habits that most people tend to develop when they become freakishly obsessed when it comes to gaming, their health takes a huge toll from the lack of physical exercise (and no, exercising through flicking the remote does not qualify as a form of exercise). Well, we can never under estimate gaming moguls (or moguls to generalize) when it comes to sniffing out money.

Like other similar titles, a range of peripherals will be available allowing you to get the full benefit from the game - all the typical instrument based controllers you could associate with a rock band, needless to say these will be sold separately and will increase the cost of your personal Rock Band package, but if you’re into music or party games, the added expense could prove worthwhile. (more…)

“New information from the U.S. Census Bureau reinforces the value of a college education: workers 18 and over with a bachelor’s degree earn an average of $51,206 a year, while those with a high school diploma earn $27,915. Workers with an advanced degree make an average of $74,602 and those without a high school diploma average $18,734”, according to the U.S. Census Bureau website.

Yes, college degrees can double your earnings for the year. Although relying solely on your talent is not really that bad, as there are lots of millionaires, and even billionaires, out there who were not lucky enough to get into college due to lack of funds or whatnot, it is the thing is, not everyone can rise to the top as the lucky ones were able to do. (more…)

Not only are unlikely and potentially messy mergers happening everywhere (but these companies might just prove us wrong, no one is a total know-who when it comes to the ever changing flavor of the masses), but companies seem to be totally going nuts when it comes to their console and game pricing. Pricing, which should have been one of the first things in these (ahem, money grabbing) corporate hotshots minds seem to be getting unpredictable and even mind boggling.

GTA 4 brings us back to the streets of Liberty City, Rockstars’ fictional imitation of New York. The streets are just as rough in Liberty City, perhaps rougher, and Rockstar has gone to great lengths to re-create some of New York’s most recognizable landmarks to feature in your destructive reign of crime.
