| Unlock Factions / Realistic Turns / Faction Changes | 88% | |
| WARNING: It's always a good idea to save an original copy of your data files before editing them. Some changes to this text file could render your installation of MTW2 unplayable. UNLOCKING FACTIONS: Locate this directory: C:Program FilesSEGAMedieval II Total Wardataworldmapscampaignimperial_campaigndescr_strat (MTW2 mods such as Lite will have a seperate descr_strat you will have to find) At the very top of the text, move all of the factions under the heading UNLOCKABLE to PLAYABLE. The only factions that you should not move to PLAYABLE are the Mongols, Timurids, and Aztecs. REALISTIC TURNS: Under the faction list in your descr_strat file is the line "TIMESCALE 2.00". This is what makes the game unrealistically skip 2 years per turn, makes your faction leaders have 240-year lifetimes, and makes a simple building take 4 years to build. For those who want 900 turns instead of 200ish, who want realistic character ages, or just want the summer/winter season changes to make more sense, set this line to read "TIMESCALE 0.50". While I haven't played thru an entire 900-turn campaign game yet, this appears to successfully make each turn worth 1/2 a year or equal to one season change between summer/winter. FACTION CHANGES: For those who are so inclined, there are a lot of modding possibilities in the descr_strat file. Just below the TIMESCALE line is a list of every trade resource on the campaign map along with it is map coordinates. By using the console code "show_cursorstat" you could find in-game coordinates and make your own resources. Why not make Jerusalem worth conquering by putting a ton of resources around it? | ||

| Diplomats / Trade - How to use properly | 79% | |
| Diplomats are very important, especially at the start of the game when money is tight. You should have a plan to send at least 1 Diplomat (or possibly 2 if you are in the middle of the map) to go around to every single other faction in the game. E.G. As England or France - Send a diplomat down to get Trade with Milan / Venice / HRE / Pope / Sicily then on to Hungary, Poland, Byzantium, Turks, Egyptians etc etc - Trade is very important. When offering a trade deal, do not just go for the trade deal itself, ask for more and good things can happen. First things first, try offering Trade rights with your Map Information and then ask for their Map Information and a payment of around 500-800 every turn for 5-6 turns If the deal looks Generous or Balanced go ahead and offer it and see what they say. If it is Demanding, take off their Map Information and just offer your map information and trade for the money. A lot of nations will reject the payments every turn but will likely offer you 1000 - 1,800 for 2-3 turns - You can haggle a bit but you will not get much more than this out of them. If you can do this for every faction you meet, very early on, being able to get this deal with 5-6 factions quickly (like Venice, France, HRE, Sicily, Pope, Milan) can amount up to a lot of gold. 6 Factions each paying around 1,200 per turn for 3 turns = 7,200 gold x 3 turns = 21,600 gold income in the first 20 turns, which needless to say is very vital to growth. | ||
