The basic style of gameplay hasn't changed much since MK3, with the exception of some extra features. You still take control of a fighter, and pound your way through the opposition to win glory, power and survival for the inhabitants of the earth. MK4 is the first game in the series to support 3DFX cards through Glide, as well as Direct 3D cards. Each figher has a weapon which can be drawn during a fight. Once the weapon's drawn, the punch keys can be used to slash and hack with it, doing more damage than ordinary punches or kicks. MK features a combo system whereby you can string together particular moves to produce damaging super-combos. MK4 will push the attacking player away, with the words 'Maximum Damage', although Maximum Damage can be disabled so you can develop once you've got to grips with the basics of the game. Also worth trying out are the various fighting modes including a tournament mode, group mode, practice mode, and endurance mode. MK4 supports 3DFX cards through Glide, as well as Direct 3D cards. Lighting effeccts are put to good use, with projectiles and other light sources illuminating the characters with ordinary flavor and colored lighting.
