In order to plant trees in your Chao Garden, you'll need the seed, of course. (You can buy those at Black Market, but you propably knew that before.) If the ball above of your Chao's head does change it's color, it doesn't mean that it's dying.
To make your Chao re-born, take care of your Chao well - feed it when it's hungry, be kind to it and of course, never-ever hurt it.
If your Chao does die, it means that you haven't taken good care of it.

If your chao is still a chao it takes about 2 - 3 hours to evolve. if your chao has already evolved it'll live for about 15 hours and then it'll either die or reincarnate.
P.S. - your chao will probably do one of the 2 things above if it's sleeping a lot

Feed it all 21 animals and it should evolve into its last form.

What you need to do is if you whant a hero chao you treat it with good people and feed it with them fore about 1 day or so. If dark same thing but with dark people. If nuetral chao then just feed with both but dont let it get to dark or to light or it wont be nuetral.

Mine took only one day to evovle. I fed it a lot with friuts from the normal choa garden and the dark garden. Petting it helps and do a lot of missions or stages or watev and make sure to feed them what you get to raise there levels.

Normally, it takes about 2-3 hours for Chao to evolve. Remember, if your Chao does sleep a lot, it is actually a good thing, since usually, when it has slept enough and it wakes up, it'll evolve. Also, remember to feed your Chao and pet it a lot. Petting does help when trying to make your Chao evolve.

The character alike Chaos you can get are Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao.
However, I can't remember what it was all about, but in the past there was some event where you could get Knuckles Chao and Amy Chao. You can get Tails Chao from some Phantasy Star game, but I don't happen to remember which game it was.
But no, there isn't any official Dr. Eggman or Rouge Chao.
Oh yes, there is also a NiGHTS Chao you can get by doing a Neutral Flying Chao, but NiGHTS isn't really a Sonic character, but anyway.

You mite have to much memory on your memory card when the gameqube icon shows up hold the a button then press the down button and press a again then you can delete data you dont want anymore

There are many possiblities.
A) Your Memory Card might be damaged in a way or another. Try saving your game into another Memory Card, or buy a new one.
B) Are you sure that the Memory Card you're using does have 11 blocks free? SA2B does require 11 blocks (3 blocks for the main game and 8 blocks for Chao Data).
The Chao Garden does have an auto-save feature, so I guess that's not the problem.

As for first, you'll need the pumpkin. Use Knuckles or Rouge and go to the Chao Garden and dig around. When you've found a pumpkin, give it to the Chao who you want to wear the it. However, sometimes the Chao simply doesn't want to wear it.
*Note* If you want to take the pumpkin off the Chao's head, you'll have to throw the Chao against a wall or you have to attack it. The Chao won't like you so much as before, though, and the Chao might even get a headache. -Answer by:RipperRoo

Leave the game on all night and check if it is five or six if it is check that it has a pink cacoon if not it wont turn back into an egg and by the way this is called a chao reincarnation

Take care of your Chao well, so it will do a re-born when it does reach the age of 5. It will turn into a pink cocoon and then it will be an egg again. However, if the cocoon turns out to be gray, your Chao will die.
