I pause the the game, hold L, and then type the rest of the cheat in.

Could it be because the game is a platinum hit? Any suggestions?

Army Men: Sarge's War
On the verge of a long-awaited peace between the Green and the Tan, rogue elements of the Tan Army draw Sarge and his men out into the field.
