Medieval 2: Total War
This can be tricky, depending on the character's name. I seem to have more sucess since I add the v1.01 AND v1.02 patches. Otherwise I could only adjust another faction's character if he had a single name (i.e. Roger) For multiple names you will need quotation marks around the name, and sometimes an underscore if it's a three-part name or more. Example (I'm gonna use the leader of Venice at the beginning of a campaign as my example):
give_trait "Domenico Selvo" BadCommander 5
If it's a three-part name you may need the underscore (this next name is totally made up):
give_trait "Louis de_Dijon" BadCommander 5
Try different combinations if you get the "character not found" message, you may stumble across the right name. These cheats also apply to your own faction as far as two and three-part names. (i.e. If you started as Venice, you would need the quotes to give Domenico a trait)

Just select the character and type "give_trait this "
It's very easy to just take a fast look and type in the title and name and the characterm but the only what you need to put in his name is his name..
Ex: you got a character with name Prince Guy
give_trait "Guy" BadCommander 5
that's how it will look:)
be very accurate with the capitals in their name, if you don't get the capitals right it won't work)
have fun)

Aye, for the gods demand! Attack and exloit the enemy, till there is no more! Slughter and kill the women and children....none left alive...
Im basically saying that if you destroy that faction, it shall be unlocked.
EXAMPLE: England destroys Scotland. I play as Scotland.
If you cant figure it out, see a doctor.

All you do is win the game once and all the factions are unlocked... Enjoy
You can complete the game to unlock the factions, but there is a much simpler way of unlocking them - see the video below

I want to create general' s bodyguard, what name should I use in the create_unit code?
Only special Heroes. Such as William Wallace in Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms.
In amaricas you can wit asdec an native amircans
I had an experience once. I have a set of peasants (3 sets) kill a rebel force. Then after that the captain is recognized for "Man of the Hour" - I accept and on the next battle he is a general on foot comanding not horses, but peasants... - such a shame...
First, let's make sure you don't mess up the original. Open up a blank Notepad sheet and copy/paste the entire original onto it. Save it as "Descr_stratORIGINAL" or something so you know what it is save it in MyDocuments or something. Might be a good idea to right click on the file afterwards and check the "Read-Only" box so you can't mess it up. Next, find the icon for the descr_strat.txt in the Medieval 2 folder, not your new copy, the one that comes with the game. Right-click on this icon and UN-check the "Read-Only" box. You should now be able to change what you like. If you change soemthing that does not agree with the game, when you go to start a mission it will move you back one window. That's how you know there's a mistake in the descr_strat. If that happens, it's best to find your copy in the MyDocuments folder, copy/paste it over top of the whole descr_strat in the Medival 2 folder and start over.
If from the netherlands so it looks different for me/ but just right click on the map you want to change then select the option to see the qualities (that came out of a translation machine )) and there you should be able to turn "Read-Only" off and then you can change everything, but when you're done you should turn it back, becaus it is possible the game turns it back automatically. good luck )
Or you can just right click on the text document, go to properties and uncheck the read-only option where it says attributes.

If you want to cheat to get gunpowder units early in the game, then look around on this forum because several people have posted about "artillary elephants" and "rocket launchers". However, in the game, you must wait quite a few years until gunpowder is "discovered". It will come across like the windmill, Mogol invasion, compass, rudder, etc. scientific discovery boxes on the left of the screen. I forget the exact date, but it's not too long AFTER the Mongol invasion.
If you want to get units in the beginning of a game you need a City/Castle and the CONSOLE. Go to Console by clicking or pressing ~ button on your keybaord and the console will come up. This is my example since I play the English.
create_units London "Arqubuisers" 4 9 3 3
If you the others like Spain with Musketeers type in
create_units (Spains capitol I dont really know) "Musketeers" 4 9 3 3

Well if you want to know some Units to create I can give you some, For example Two units in the game that they use, Handgunners, Arquebusiers, and Musketeers
They are actual names of them and will work perfectly to create
create_unit London "Arquebusiers" 4 9 3 3
create_unit London "Musketeers" 4 9 3 3
create_unit Jerusalem "Handgunners" 4 9 3 3

Go to Options and it should say Unit Size Scale in the Options. You can change from 4 of them, I think

Go to descr strat.txt there go to the line time that is 2.00 make it 0.50

Try "Armoured_Swordsmen"
A2:

It's "Armored Swordsmen" :)
Win many battles
BattleScarred
Battlescarred
You get it by putting your general fights and hurting him alot and then winning
Let your general fight along with his man and let him be wounded, if your grapphics card is high he wil het wounds,
and if he's wounded get him out of the melee and keep him safe do this +- 5 battles in a row and he wil be brutally scarred
Steelbird

If you're asking about the "this" command for the cheat console, it means literally what it reads. In practice, it's used to identify a character that you have selected with the cursor who is outside of a city and on dry land. In a cheat code, it would go something like:
give_trait this GoodCommander 5
The general that would get this trait would need to be selected by the cursor, outside of a city and on dry land. Use it on Priests, Assassins, Generals, etc. especially when they have a name that is longer than 1 word.

I believe you are entering it incorrectly. Quotations are usually optional, I type all my cheats without them and they work fine. Try:
create_unit Nottingham armored_swordsmen 3 9 3 3
Typically the unit names are lowercase, all spaces must be filled by and underscore, the city name must be capitalized, and I'm not sure, but I think the numbers have to be separated, otherwise the computer would think it was 3,933 and not 3/9/3/3. There are TONS of other cheats, and this site has a large bulk of them, look around. I use the character trait and "process_cq" codes, listed above, very often.

Type create_unit "Nottingham" "Armored Swordsmen" 3 9 3 3. Spaces come between each digit of the number. Otherwise, your unit name might not be correctly spelled. That's my most common source of error. It should tell you exactly what's wrong.
Create_unit Nottingham "Armoured Swordsmen" 5 9 3 3

First of all, you must be playing a Catholic faction (No Russia, Byzantine, Moors, Turks, or Egypt) Only the pope can "call a crusade." Open the scroll that shows the pope and his feelings towards all factions and you'll see a small circle with a cross near the top left. This is the "request crusade" button, if it's grey then either a crusade is already in progress or it's been too soon since the last crusade. If blue, you can request the pope to call a crusade on a city from a list of cities that threaten Catholocism. Typically they're Islamic cities, factions that have been excommunicated, or some Rebel cities. Pick your city and request. If granted by the pope, select a general to send on the crusade. The general needs to have a certain number of units with him and he must be located outside a city on dry land. Open the mercenary scroll for this general and there is another blue crusade button, this time at the bottom left. Click "Join Crusade" and he'll get a white flag with a red cross. You'll usually find there's lots of new mercenaries that are available to join the crusade, buy any if you like, then make your way to the target city. Make sure you keep moving each turn towards the crusading city or some of your troops will desert you to pursue the crusade on their own.

I have the same problem but have had the game for a few months. it just started doing this and I cant seem to find the save file anywhere in the game files
A1:

You need to try and 'force' them to attack. if possible, gather an army from somewhere nearby and approach the castle. The enemy will do either one of three things:
A) abandon the seige and attack the new army
B) retreat away from the castle, allowing you to pursue (though be careful of ambushes)
C) attempt to take the castle. If you know your not going to be able to win the fight, then try and take out as many troops as possible. If you have an army heading to said castle to aid the defenders, they should be able to easily retake the castle.
It all depends on playing style. Sometimes, If I know I can't hold a castle, say Angers from a mighty English army, I try and deal them a few defeats elsewhere (for instance, I went around their backs and was able to take York, Nottingham and London with some small armies and a few catapults), then negotiate a peace deal via a diplomat/princess.

Well first type in the show_cursorstat like I typed it to get your coordinates and second for example type in move_character "Alexander" then what ever the coordinate number is for example 66,120 and so forth. Type it in like I just did and you should be fine.Just remember use the quotation marks in front and after the character name.Hope this helps you out. -Answer by:logik0505
For your Character reset just type it in exactly like this For example character_reset "Alex" just like that and you should be fine. the character name I gave is just an example of course. -Answer by:logik0505
Hover your mouse pointer over the exact location of the campaign map where you want to move your character and then type in the console
show_cursorstat
This will give you the coordinates of the location, ie 166,30
then to move your character there, type
move_character "Edward Canmore" 166,30
obviously Edward Canmore is just an example.

Open it, Search fore the faction you want to use the next Campaign, add units, add money, change your characters traits, etc.
Enter the toggle fog of war in the console. (code is toggle_fow). Then use the show cursor stat cheat on in the americas. and finally, use the move character cheat to move the character to the location. do this after dunpowerder is discovered so that you can send ships over
No, there is no cheat.
But you can mod, but do it only with advice. And backups. -Answer by:Warluster
But you can mod, but do it only with advice. And backups. -Answer by:Warluster
I have a couple theories that you could try, I haven't done these myself. Without modding, there is no way early in the game because none of the ships are capable of crossing the ocean. You can open the desrc_strat.txt file and change a couple things: 1) change the starting year so that the ships are discovered sooner 2) change the "year perspective" so that each turn is more than 2 years, you'll hit the ocean ships faster 3) get a mod program that allows basic ships across the sea. If you're already 100 turns into a campaign I don't think there's anything you can change. Best of luck.
Yeah. You can. Create_unit for one of the heavy galleys in the same unit as one of your admirals. Then, start moving to the New World. Each time your movement points are up, character_reset "Admiral's Name"
O get there you have to get the toggle_fow cheat then show_cursorstat to where you want to drop units. Then move_character "" and the first 2 numbers you see after you typed in show_cursorstat ex:move_character "Leopold" 255,56. note:if you're asking I didn't find this cheat
By the way, on turn 200 and something the americas will be discoverd, and the ships you have now (cogs, holks, galleys, dhows, ect.) can't reach the americas. Only caravels can.
A1:

Your prince cant be married already as long as he isnt it should work
A2:

FOREIGN princess is royalty. Therefore, she can only marry royalty (i.e. your faction leader OR your faction heir ONLY). She cannot marry any other general in your faction. To get another faction's princess to marry your un-wed faction leader/heir, send a diplomat to speak with her (or if she initiates diplomacy with your faction, the option should be there).
A1:

You can't build more at a time, but if you press the arrow key up while in the cheat menu you can re-enter your last command. So fill the Que and press ~ type in process_cq 'province name' and then repeat-- arrow up, enter. arrow up, enter. until you need to put more buildings in the que.
A2:

I just wanted to add to this person's answer. The description of the cheat should say all the possible constuctions, which means all the ones that are highlighted green.
Well, the fact is, as Aztecs historically never saw horses, they didn't have any spearmen, did they?
I suggest you swarm the horsemen, or take them out from a range. -Answer by:Warluster

I did a custom battle I was aztecs in city. I had 15 units of arrow warriors and 5 units of jaguar warriors. I put the archers on the wall and the sword man by the gate. The computer was england it had 15 units of mailed knights and 5 units of dismounted feudal kngnts.
They still had spearmen, just not for use against cavalry seeing as it didnt exist to them.
I think theres a unit of "Aztec Spearmen" which are pretty effective though, but they will take pretty awesome losses
I think theres a unit of "Aztec Spearmen" which are pretty effective though, but they will take pretty awesome losses
I would use masses of spearmen, or, even better, ambush them
All basic spearmen are massively underrated. Form them into schildrom formation and place them in a suitable pattern before your other units. There should be some space between each of them so that the charging enemy units will flow around them, and get stuck with half the unit between two schildroms. Schildrom formation is also extremely effective in defending cities, when placed in front of the gates and tower exits. Schildrom also lets you place more units in a smaller space because they are tighter, so the morale boost of greater number will let your otherwise cowardly militia units take on jaguar warriors and such. Only drawbacks are that your spearmen will be vulnerable to arrows and cannons, and that the schildrom is hard to use in an offensive matter (although you can have your spearmen charge and change formation in last second to counter the enemies counter charge).

You can not play with the original game, but you can go into your Medieval 2 TW directory (where you installed it) and go into Data/world/base/campaign/descr strat txt file. Before you change ANYTHING, make a copy in case you stuff up.
At the start of the file you'll see a list, unlocked, locked and unplable. Copy and paste Aztecs into playable.
Be warned, they can not get too Europe and can't buid anything, but there is a mod which changes this. -Answer by:Warluster

Whatever you do don't do the all factions cheat. It breaks the game!(Apparently :D)
I must concur with Answer 6, because for some odd reason, as soon as the game starts (1080 AD), the Aztec civilization fails and is destroyed. Same thing if I try to play them, I appearantly fail with my mission and I lose.
First you must find the file descr strat and there will write Aztecs undiscovered and you need to delete that sentence and that's it

First of all, if your family members are dwindling, try to keep them out of battle and give them all the trait "Fertile 3" so that they will start producing children extremely fast, usually one per turn. Then, take a small/weak army without a family member commanding it,but a captain. Attack a much larger/stronger army. At the battle window, enter the auto win code. this should come to a clear victory or a heroic victory. Either way, there is a good chance that a window will come up with the title: "Man of the Hour." This will allow you to adopt the captain into your family.
A2:

Theirs probably some mysterious way to do it via hexing and editing a save, as characters are usually just waiting to be born, name ready and everything. I've played england twice, both times I had a child called Henry.
However, if you have one member of you're family who is married, if you give him the fertile trait, and then the wifeisfertile cheat, you should get a new member within a turn or two. Since you've asked for an explanation..
give_trait "Name" "Trait (like Fertile" "amount"
Now, if you're character has an extension to the name like 'The Conqueror' or something, and you can't find out what his last name was beforehand, you can just select him and put 'this' where the name should go. I'll give an example.
give_trait this fertile 3
Now, as you can see from most of the traits, they can go up any number, but limited. So if it doesnt add it, knock it down a number.
Well, I hope this helps.

Hi someone please help me. I read some where that you can add 1000000 florins entering the code in the campain map. Where is the campain map? and how do you pull it up.Also there adminisstrator codes that can be used also I have been told.Is there any truth to this and how do I use them and what keys do I press? Thank you
Question from: logik0505(44)
The campagin map is the big map you look at between battles
it consists of Europe, the middle east, africa, and some of asia.
it consists of Europe, the middle east, africa, and some of asia.
To answer your money cheat question, you press the ~ button and a little screen should pop up saying "welcome to med shell". Then you type in, add_money 40000 that will get you 40000 florins.
Press this button (~) while on campaign map and put in cheat code
Well the cheat for 1000000 florins is Medieval Total War not Medieval 2 Total War and just stick with the ~ key cheats, U may need to download a patch to do it.
My medieval 2 dosnt react when I press the (~) button, it does this with rome too, whats stranger is I have several different versions of medieval 2 and I have had them installed on several types of pc and at no point has the (~) button ever worked
If the normal ~ button does not work, try the ' button instead (that is @ without shift). Its next to ~.
' key works for me
' key works for me
You can do the same with add_money 40000 with ~ on the actual campagin
When your on the campaign map push ` and it should bring down a console, then you type in add_money 40000. 40000 is the max amount you can put in, but you can do it over and over again until you get your desired amount.
Press the ` button. if that dosent work press '. Then type in:
add_money 40000
nothing should be in capitals
add_money 40000
nothing should be in capitals
Also, it is impossible to add more than 40 thousand florins at one time, even if you input a much higher value. You can repeat the code many times, however.

To get the list of traits and ancillaries go to http://oobucksworld.tripod.com/id13.html and scroll down the page until you see "Medieval II:right here".It should be underlined and colored blue.
The website has a couple of goofy pictures. So you're there if you see them.
To get the names of the traits you need to get patch 1.1 and unpack your files.then go to My computer and look in your C drive(C:).Then go to program files then SEGA file then medieval 2.Once you're in you should see a long list of files(After you unpack it).Go to the file character traits or go to the ancillary file and you'll have more info than you need.Your game will most likely crash after you unpack your files but that can easily be fixed.Check out the forums on the interenet and look for people with the same problem.I would tell you but I'm too lazy.

The easyest way to find out wat units you can make it to go in to custom battle to see wat units you want
Vindaloo
Madras
These give you elephants - just open the normal window for putting cheats in, with a city already selected, and type the word above on it's own.

Elephants:
vindaloo
Madras
Rogan
Siege:
george
houston
istanbul
- I really say the code istanbul is good for attacking cities with walls.

The Timurids come around turn 200. BE WARNED! They have VERY expirienced elephants and are VERY hard to defeat
Answer one and 2 are right. I had a huge english empire and the timurids destroyed it and every town had these exactly 4 elephant rocketeers 6 arquebusiers and 10 armored swordsmen all of them had maxed upgrades yet they became the only faction that could fight me and win
Charater_reset allow's you to move an army or fleet farther than normal. For instance when you click an army to move to attack a city you'll see the army's path in green (for the area it can cover during that turn) then in red and blue and so on. Character_reset reset's the army and they will be able to move the over again.
It resets your character movement to make another move ( does not always work )
But this Character_reset dosent work for character with 2 names, aslo when there 2 character of same name it always resets the unwanted Character. Any Solution.
For a character with two names, you need quotes. Ex:
character_reset "Bob Marley"
character_reset "Bob Marley"
Huh for my king his name is "King Edward" I just put Edward with no "" and it worked same for prince such and such... odd...
A5, that is correct. King, Prince, Emperor and similar titles are not needed to be typed in, for example if you want to reset King Evil Cookie's movement, type in
character_reset "Evil Cookie", and not KING Evil Cookie.
character_reset "Evil Cookie", and not KING Evil Cookie.
Just get like a 1 person army outside your settlement, then click the army,an type in the code, such as george or whatever, then they will join that army :)
I like Answer 1 but I already know that. I ment a reg unit like feudal knights. (PS. this is the person who asked the question)
A basic example is (create_unit Rufus "Dismounted Longbowmen" 2 9 1 3"
The rules however for the code are that you can not add units not of the faction you are playing, some of the unit names have been changed but are generally the same.
The names have to be surrounded by quotation marks like "David Canmore", or "Mac_Bethead Canmore", or "Sigmund de_Betrand", or "Sigilus von_Keslo" Anyone with a title or a single name do not need quotations and should be Rufus not "Rufus. When they have a title like "Prince Nectar" if the title was aquired before your last load, save and reload the game and you will not need to find the lastname, it will simply be Nectar. Lastly King and Prince and Councilor, and Duke titles do not go with names, in or out of quotations.

With the Assassin selected, drop the console down and type:
give_trait this GoodAssassin 4
give_trait this NaturalAssassinSkill 3
give_trait this AssassinsGuildMember 2
give_ancillary this assassins_blade
give_ancillary this assassins_apprentice
give_ancillary this accomplice
This is a kick arse Assassin

give_trait this AssassinsGuildMember 2
give_ancillary this assassins_blade

give_ancillary this accomplice

Don't forget give_ancillary this explosives .... for their espionage missions
The goodassassin trait can actually go up to 5
The ancillary "pet_bloodhound","femme_fatale" and "handgun" also give +2 to subterfuge each one of them.If it is to give your assassin only 3 ancillaries.
Unfortunatly, you can't get the woodsmen guild unless playing the English. Sorry:-(
You could play as the Russians who also have them.
Keep a high Chivalry (4+) Governor in the settlement and build the Brothel series of buildings. If you just demolish then rebuild the basic Brothel as often as you can you should get access to it.
You have to recruit as many archers as you can. If you qualify for this guild, it doesn't give you new type of unites but if you qualify for Master Woodsmens' Guild, you'll be able to recruit "Sherwood Archers". -Answer by:knight007
