Medieval 2: Total War
I've had that problem as well. It seems to be the same as on other games, e.g. Oblivion, where you can change aspects of the game using console commands. There's no way round it - the console commands conflict with what the game knows should be there and so the whole thing crashes. You'll have to manage without the elephants.
I had the same problem with rome total war but I have seen it work
Just like in Rome Total War, after you use code for elephants, you need to save and restart. Once you have reloaded your saved game, the computer will not crash. Lame but works -Answer by:mandro14
It works for me, I dont kno whats worng with yall
If it's slow that something, or some place is (1) using up too much space, or (2) graphic card/not compatible with game requirements......
You can not get a unit with gold armor and sword. there is a limit to every unit
If you do it in the program files you can get max for all areas
but don't change other things because it take's along time to get back if you don't have back up's.C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign then its descr_strat

I always write e.x. 5 9 9 9 so it gives for any unit their best of equipment
For Settlement or Character name you have to use the name of an Admiral to which you want to add the ship so for example to add Holk's to Admiral Nigel you'd use
create_unit "Nigel" "Holk" 5 9 3 3 (or your preference)
create_unit "Nigel" "Holk" 5 9 3 3 (or your preference)
U cant
For ships dont use capital letters all lower case
As far as I know, you can't spawn a ship at a dock like you do with land units at cities, you need to spawn it into a pre-existing admiral, ie: create_unit "Admiral George" "holk" 5 0 0 0
You just have type create_unit "Admiral's name" "ship's name" 1 9 3 3 the name of the boat musn't be in cappital words if the name of the boat is a one letter word you don't have to put " "

What is this eligibility trait that priests and cardinals have? How do I find it? I want to know because it's supposed to be a tie breaker in a papal election if piety is also tied.
Question from: computerwiz(5)
A1:

Eligability is how much more likely your priest/bishop is going to be elected to a cardinal position by the pope when there is an opening on the College of Cardinals. It also can give your cardinal a boost if he is one of the 3 Preferati (cardinals eligable to become pope) when the papal seat opens up. There are 2 traits that I know of that add eligability: "Purifier" and "Missionary". The max level on both is 3, but you can have both at the same time. Have your priest convert a population over a long period of time/over a large percentage. (Like 0% Catholic to 40% or more). If you would like to cheat, click on your priest, hit the tilde key (~), then type: "give_trait this Purifier 3" without the quotation marks and hit enter. Repeat but change the word "Purifier" to "Missionary".
A2:

If you have enough priests in the collage of cardinals then youve pretty much won the pope electoin
A1:

Select that priest and type give_trait this missonary 3
A2:

All you have to do is type
give_trait this GoodPriest 5/4
give_trait this NaturalPriestSkill 3
give_trait this Missionary 3
give_trait this Purifier 3
give_trait this PublicFaith 4

How does the move objects cheat work? I can't finde out where the (x coord) and (y coord) is! can someone show me how to do this cheat?
Question from: joakim(3)
A1:

Example (move_character Rufus 246,45) and your unit will be near of Jerusalem, now how I know the coords easy just type (show_cursorstat) and will give the coords number you need. also make sure your mouse is pointing in the spot you decide to get the coords.
A1:

Yes..they have to be princesses and you can only select them before they get married.
A1:

You probably have a different version eg.1.0,1.5 try updating it
A2:

Stop trying to give yourself more than 200000 at once? You don't need it, just add more money whenever you start running low.
You have to win lots of battles with him and then he will be adopted. about 1-5
Or you can go on to descr_strat to change the the general in named character
Best way is to get an army with no general to win 3-4-5 quick battles in a row (best way is just after capturing a settlement and there is 3-4 enemy armies around the settlement, click to attack the enemy so they run away - do this to the 3-4 small enemy armies then hopefully you can follow up and actually kill one of the enemies and with luck you will get offered a general -Answer by:x1xx1x
You sometimes get a general after a heroic victory, but I don't know how you could ensure that. -Answer by:stevedebritt
The easiest way is to win a battle with your side having one less unit than the opposing side, it usually tends to work for me, however I always choose to take archers and calvary rather than infantry so that you can easily take out the hardest unit types to beat first (ie. General's bodyguard and/or heavy unit infantry unit types)
A1:

If You have XP it shouldnt be a problem. If you have vista you have to save it somewhere else and then move the file to imperial campaign.
A2:

You need to make sure you have permission to alter the files in the folder - watch the video below on how to unlock and edit the factions.
The problem will be it saying it cannot save file - or file name path etc - you basically just need to change the permissions so you can make changes and save (making file not read only)

Hover the mouse pointer over the place on the campaign map where you want to move your unit/agent/ship and type in the console
show_cursorstat
this will give you the coordinates in (x,y) format.
to move a unit there, type ie:
move_unit "Captain George" 133,60

Garrison some spies in your big cities - also I think priests and assassins can help - making government buildings is also good + having a good general helps some. -Answer by:x1xx1x
A2:

Order due to law counteracts corruption. So, yes, governors with some of the chivalrous and honest traits and city halls are your solution.
A1:

Right click on the folder that contains the strat files (I think its "imperial campaign" one) then after right clicking, click on properties, then choose security - select the username you are using, then click "full control" and then apply - it should work then, if it doesnt save, go back and select all of the options other than full control 9same thing basically) then try again -Answer by:x1xx1x
A1:

Step-by-Step: Hit the tilde (~), Shell should open, then type:
add_money 40000
Then hit Enter 40,000 is the max you can add at one time. If you're looking for a massive amount, after you sucessfully enter it once, hit the up arrow and it wll bring it back, hit Enter again. Then go rapid Up Enter Up Enter Up Enter and so on till you get the amount you want.

A1:

Just a suggestion, this might or might not solve it. Check under "Settings" for the game controls. Try removing the "quicksave" from the tilde key and putting it on something else like F12. Might free it up for you to open the "Medieval Shell" window. Good luck!
A2:

I did that it still doesnt work...
A1:

The way it works for me is on the screen of the overview of all the provinces I press the key with the "@" symbol (don't bother holding shift if the symbol is the top one on the key it doesn't matter if it is). Other people have said they press the "~" key but that doesn't work for me, you may need to play around pressing all the punctuation keys until it works. You will know if it has worked because a large black text box appears on the screen. You then type the code for the money cheat the code is case sensitive so type it exactly as it is below:-
add_money 40000
Once you have typed this press enter and your money should increase by 40000. The amount of money added can be changed by changing the number at the end however 40000 is the max amount per code. If you want to add loads of money then you just need to press "up" on the directional arrows on the keyboard after you press enter. This will insert the code below the previous one and you just need to press enter again. You close the black text box by pressing the same key you used to open it.
Hope this helps people!

You also need to change the names in the global names file, if they don't match up it won't work. I don't remember the name it maybe descr_names, just look for a file full of all names of the charecters
A1:

Yes. You can use the "this" parameter
A2:

Also if you have the enemy clicked and type in the this parameter that would also help ya
"Rufus of_England"
Alright this is WAY MUCH EASIER THAN TYPING THEM IN...
Move your Character/General out of the castle
Then type
give_trait this
It is way faster

Actually, if you're in a city, typing Rufus would be easiest...
For faction leaders with titles like king rufus the honorable check famly tree for a princess, she usualy keeps her last name, so use rufus and last name princess has. "rufus smith"
Type in give_trait "Ian Inchmertyn" GoodCommander
You dont need the quotes. You can use either give_trait this while the character is selected on the campaign map or give_trait "Character Name" You need the quotes if you use the character name.
2 examples:
give_trait this GoodCommander 5
give_trait "Joe Blow" GoodCommander 5

If it says character not found then he is either in a city or you havent clicked him. to add traits they must be out of a city. so move your guy barely out of the city and make sure youve clicked him and it should work. after your done you can put him back.
Select a person to give traits and hit ~ to bring the cheat box. Next type in give_trait this GoodCommander 5. It WILL work unless you haven't selected a person to give the trait to.
If you want to add traits without moving him from the city, type
give_trait "Ian Inchmertyn" GoodCommander 5
or if you have someone with a multi-part name, it's typed like
give_trait "Luis de_Marseille" GoodCommander 5
the easiest way to do it though is by simply taking them out of the city and typing
give_trait this GoodCommander 5

Upgrade the city. If your squalor is massive, lower the tax rate till ou can upgrade the city
Build buildings that increase the health of the population, you can also garrison characters that have special bonuses to reducing squalor - if no other options and you are doing well enough in the game anyways - you can always just move your army out of the city until it riots - then capture it again and exterminate the population :D - bloddy but effective. -Answer by:x1xx1x
Churches & Council buildings bring it down quickly -Answer by:stevedebritt
Easy: add_population Rome -20000 (or with any amount you want)
Turn 65
For me it's mostly either turn 67 or 69.
When da Gunpowder Age is coming nearly... 76 78 79 @@.... Gunpowder comes in 80 turns
The Mongols appear in turn 69 ^^! lol

Go to my computer. Click on Local Disk c or d. Program files/sega/medieval 2:total war. Delete everything inside the m2tw file then reinstall the game.
A2:

You could try to save it on a different path so instead of something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War You could save it in a newly made file like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Medieval II Total War, that worked for me when I had the same problem with Rome.
Tell us the city so we can help
I've got the same problem :(
I think you put them in quotes but not 100% sure
For most characters, instead of using their name, you use the word "this". You have to click on a character and seperate him from settlements and armies for it to work.
An example:
give_trait this GoodCommander 3
For most settlements, you simply have to use a _ in the space between the words. It won't work on some settlement names however.

You need to type the full name of the character, this can be quite tricky when you get a high level trait and it overrides their name ie "Malcolm Canmore" becomes "Malcolm the Tyrant" when he gets a high level dread-trait, but in the console you would still type
give_trait "Malcolm Canmore" GoodTrader 3
Your best bet is to try a few different variations of the name out if you don't get it right first time.

What he means is that unless it has one word, the code doesn't work. I can't remember and I'm looking for the same help. But maybe try inbetween each space _ but I'm not certain if I can't find a help maybe I'll go through checking for things like that. Hope it helped a lil
I've had trouble with this too. I just came across an answer to another question that mentioned this.
as far as I can tell you're meant to put the name in double quote marks.
eg. give_trait "Maximillian Mandorf" GoodCommander 3
or for creating units: create_unit Vienna "militia spearmen" 1 9 1 1
I'm going to go try this out now.

Put quotation marks around the unit names, cities, characters that have a name longer then one word.

You build the required building (for diplomats its a town hall) then the agent should pop up in the recruitment list.
A2:

Assuming you mean creating them in the console like you can with army units no, it isn't possible.
A1:

Two ways
Build archery range then upgrade it a ton till catapults and other counterparts are open for purchase
#2 when you attack a city, different war machines will be there. this is the only place to have these units, however

A2:

When you have a settlement or character you simply put either NE,ME,EE,SE in front of the artillery name
example: create_unit "London" "NE Catapult" 3 9 3 3 and it will be created depending on the location of the map
NE- Norther Europe
ME- Middle East
EE- Eastern Europe
SE- Southern Europe

A1:

First, create an army with at least nine units and a general. Then, pullup the army screen. An icon in the bottom corner will have a pic of a red cross. Click it, the send the army to the city the pope has denounced and called a crusade against it. Good chance, its in Egypt or Israel. sometimes, however, if a faction has been excommunicated, the pope might call a crusade on a region of that faction with high Islam, Heresy, Paganism, etc.
A2:

First of all the Papal states must declare a Crusade, usually it will be called on automatically but you can request the pope on creating a crusade.
After the calling get a well sized army with a general(Sometimes the pope will ask that your king or prince to join the crusade) and then simply open up the general's information screen and at the bottom corner there will be an icon that allows you to join your army with the crusaders (i think Crusader units are cheaper to maintain or they have no cost at all so make sure you have a big army ). then get on a boat or walk if you want(Try not to trespass on other nations land though, only your allies.) to get to the crusade target.

You can't create generals in the console, and you can't disable armies.
A captain is automatically created when there is no general in an army.
Unfortunately, you can't create nor appoint your own Generals. However, you can disable the traitor feature of the game.
Open your descr_strat.txt file, and go to line #40.
It should say 'rebelling_characters_active'. Just insert a semi-colon infront of that line, and save the file.
Even though, your characters still have an attention problem, they won't go emo on you anymore. :)

You cant mate
For the name of a settlement, edit the name of the settlement by clicking on the name and erasing the space between the two names to make it 1 name. idk if that can work on people, ive never tried.
Use "
A1:

I've had the same problem but I found out from another source which I can't remember. what you do with this is you put the " marks on each end of the unit name spaces included. For instance in your case you put in create_unit London "English Knights" 4 9 3 3 the numbers mean how strong the unit is. And another thing is when making ships DO NOT put any capital in the ship names. I haven't tried with a city but as an example you put in create_unit "Admiral Bumface" "grande carrack" 4 9 3 3. Hope this helps!

You REALLY cannot play as some of the non-payables, switching them to playable can prevent you from selecting any faction.
Type add_money "Name of faction here" "amount of money here"
You can't but you can add it to yourself, and other nations never refuse a gift from your diplomats (Even if your at war with them!)
Here is an example that I will give 40000 florins to France:
add_money france, 40000

The trait is Upright. to move the princess out of an army, you click on the portrait( there should be a woman's voice after) then, you click anywhere in her range( in green). Now, only kings and princes can have princesses as diplomats. For example, Prince Rufus's daughter can be a princess, but not Robert's.
