You must equip it by dragging it into the bottom box of the inventory screen when you right click on a character. The pheromone key should replace whatever weapon you were using. When you find the gate (purple-sh, fleshy, pulsing circle in the ground), select the character with the key then move the cursor over it. The cursor should change into the 'take item' one.
