It's a real pain, and it took me a good 20 attempts.... just keep pushing it (don't hold it down) and eventually it will work.... a real pain though.... you have to use it again later in Rouen if you wish to recieve the water gravestone :)
A2:
It's must easier if you put the controller on the table and press the x button while holding the controller down as fast a possible then it'll be much easier to get it.
