Okay, in the beggining of the game, build three wheat farms, one mill, and eight bakeries(may require you to buy a marketplace for purchase of extra wood), then spend all your resources you have left on getting your stone and iron resources up and running. Once you have enough to sell and get gold, you can build things like cathedrals to up your population(and purchase monks!)
